Could someone share with me the "trick" or proper technique to use to replace the dampening spring back into the groove in the outer surface of a brake drum without taking half your hand off?

Thanks.

Use a buddy and at least 3 large screwdrivers....and some gloves as well !

If you have some of those handy Vise Grip quick clamps, just put a couple on the drum with the spring partially on. The clamps will keep the spring from popping back off while you pry it back on.
This is a really slick method and it only takes a couple of seconds to put the spring on this way, and no chance of pinched fingers!
Put one clamp on, then pull the spring around as far as you can and then put the other clamp on. Then just take a large screwdriver and pry the remaing part of the spring on.
Just like putting a tire back on a rim.
