DXDT Withdraws from Laguna After Transporter Fire

Transporter fire rules out DXDT Racing from this weekend’s WeatherTech Championship race…

DXDT Racing has withdrawn from this weekend’s StubHub Monterey SportsCar Championship after sustaining a significant transporter fire en route to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The North Carolina-based team’s rig, which had remained on the West Coast following the recent Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, sustained a suspected axle failure on I-5 just north of Bakersfield, Calif. on Wednesday morning, leading to the blaze.

While nobody was injured in the fire, the extent of the damage has ruled the team out of competing on Sunday.

“Unfortunately the damage incurred is too substantial for us to continue moving forward for this weekend’s event in Laguna Seca, after what appears to be a failure on a left-rear truck axle and a substantial fire,” program manager Bryan Sellers told Sportscar365.

“It’s heartbreaking to have to make this decision, for all of our partners involved and individuals that support us.

“Dave Askew, Erin Gahagan and myself are all extremely thankful for the outpouring of help from competitors, our partner manufacturers, and of course IMSA.

“We are already assessing what needs to be done to make sure we are ready for Watkins Glen and moving forward.”

Robert Wickens an Mason Filippi were due to drive in Sunday’s two-hour and 40-minute IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race, which would have marked Wickens’ second start of the season after the Canadian started on GTD class pole at Long Beach.

Sportscar365 understands that the team initially explored the idea of trucking in its spare Corvette chassis back at its base on the East Coast, to Monterey, but it would have only arrived by Friday evening at the earliest, due to the 2,600-mile, 40-hour journey required.

DXDT’s withdrawal brings the entry list down to 33 cars for the race.

As Sellers alluded to, the next GTD race is the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in late June, which will allow the team added time to rebuild and regroup.
