My Dymags are in decent shape, no damage to the rim, just scuffs in the epoxy primer that was used when they painted the rims a charcoal grey. I also noted that they use this stuff(prokote) on Jet wheels which are magnesium. My guess is that magnesium is not as fragile as its sometimes made out to be, and we don't subject our cars to the constant load thats on Indy Cars, 1000hp dragsters, etc.
I also have the Gen IIs which seem to be alot heavier than Callaway Dymags and per a few people I talked to maybe alittle better when it comes to being able to withstand abuse(heavy flange), although you give up some performance. My thought is to treat the small exposed areas were the exopy is scuffed, prime them then scuff the wheel and repaint. I am going to dicuss with a few folks prior to doing it, but I don't think this is as scary as its made out to be.
If anyone is interested, I can keep you posted in how I do. This is a wait til spring project. I tend to believe that the fear is sometimes more hype than reality when it comes to doing these things. I was told the same thing about, buying a Z(too hard to work on), porting my ZR1 intake, etc. The reality is get a plan together be prepared and do yourt homework and it all works out.
