The 86-89 ABS controller has no on-board diagnostics. At one time an ABS Tester was available from OTC or Kent-Moore (PN J35890) which allowed advanced DIYs and professional service techs to diagnose problems with the system. That tool is now discontinued. This means that only the installed base of those testers, less the units which get lost or have failed, are available to use to service the systems.
I'm wondering what those techs needing to repair a 86-89 which has a Service ABS light that is on do, confronted with no OBD and no tester.
Also are there many of those testers in the hands of service facilities other than dealers?
Clouding the early C4 ABS service issue even more is the fact that both the 86-89 electronic brake control module (EBCM) and the modulator valve (also known in some model years as a "hydraulic unit") are no longer available from GM.
In the opinion of those here with experience servicing ABS on the early C4s, what are the alternatives confronted with a car which needs replacement of either item?
