Having been told how to remove the plenum on my 1985 Vette, which was a breeze, but now I find that to remove the EGR Valve I am having problems getting the bolts loose. I have tried to use my short 10 mm wrench but do not have enough space to loosen the bolts, question, is there a bent wrench that can be purchased to do this job, or what can I do. Help. I am displaying a code 32.

I did it three years ago, and I seem to think that I used a box wrench to loosen them, but that was only after liberal application of penetrating oil.

Lots of luck! EGR systems are a pain. Too bad it has to be in such a user hostile place to get at.

Rich, I think he means he has the plenum off but is having trouble getting a wrench on the EGR bolts with the runners still on!

Sound about right dr.wells?

I would spray them with WD40 or PB blaster and let it sit for a couple of hours, then finagle a wrench in there and twist anyway you can, it's tight.

Removing EGR

Mach, Thanks for the reply, yes it is tight with the rack still in place, if I am to continue removing the EGR I will construct a tool that will get into tight places, you know like heating and welding to construct. I have come to the place that I believe my EGR might be working, apparently the ECM is not functioning 100% for I am not getting vacum to the EGR. Probably will have go to the dealer and have the ECM checked out, any suggestions would be appreciated.

The EGR is controlled by a solenoid, switched by the ECM and actuated by vacuum. Use a vacuum pump to determine if the valve itself operates. If okay, then either the solenoid is bad or not getting a signal from the ECM.

The computers tend to be pretty reliable, if 'mysterious'; hence a prime suspect; oft times, unduly so. :w

Up Date: Have not had a vacumm pump check on the system to determine if the EGR Valve opens and closes, but I must have either a Solenoid, Egr Valve or ECM problem. Question, if it is the ECM, do you have to replace the entire ECM and use your original PROMS or does it mean just replace the PROM, and how do you get the PROM removed from the ECM, without a tool.
