i have a problem with my 1986 vette. the electronic dash is starting do fade and leave altogether. where it shows the speed the green bar chops out and fades around 80 km/ph. is this just a matter of replacing a bulb at the back or something? OR is it something do do with the wiring? any feedback would be great, thanks

I wish I could give you better news but you'll probably have to remove the dash and send it out for repairs. Ecklers has prices listed that range from $600 to $1000, depending on how many LCDs it needs. From what you describe, only the speedometer is acting up so you might get by with a $600 bill. I doubt if it's the bulbs since they only backlight the dash and the LCDs don't crap out when they go bad.

When you're removing the dash, you'll see 4 silver semi-round disks, two on the top about 4 inches from the ends and two on the bottom a little farther from the ends. These are heat sinks which cover the halogen bulbs used to backlight the dash. They really don't have anything to do with the LCDs, except to make them easier to see.

It's easy to remove the dash. You might want to get a repair manual that will talk you through it....but it's not a bad job. It just plugs in.

There are other electronic dash services around that might be cheaper than Ecklers.

Sorry.

P.S. I just came across this.......hope it helps....http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/kb/question.php?qstId=424.

The words are not too clear, to me. LCDs become mostly opaque, blocking (allowing) light to pass through (or not) depending on whether current is applied to them (or not). There is also a colored plastic sheet over the LCD assembly, which gives our dashes the various colors. If bulb(s) are out, the dash will be darker or not illuminated.

The article referred to would be a rather cost effective start to a repair.

I exchanged my original dash unit, years ago, at a Delco repair place for about $250. New, replacement cost, was over $2k.

Before I bought my 87 my brother in law(previous owner) had a similar problem. He removed it and shipped it out for repair. $800 later he, or should I say "I" have a good as new dash. But I agree with others, removal shouldn't be too bad. just a big pricetag for repair.
good luck

:) My 88 did the same thing... I bought one from F-Parts and it did great...they will sell you a rebuilt one and no core....go to their site.... www.fparts.com ...after I put the new one in...the lights were bright as new...very clear...good luck

There are several refurbished units for sale on ebay right now. Do a search on ebay motors for corvette digital dash. Here is a place that will do work on the individual modules for what looks like $160.00 each. If you use them let us know how it works out. I've had good luck so far with mine but if it ever goes out I would consider using these guys if their good because the whole unit may not be bad and I would want to keep my original low milage odometer. I had my 84 cluster repaired by this guy.. Corvette Parts Service and Sales in Bloomington, Indiana. Toll number 888 454 1911. He did a great job and the price was very resaonable. Like $200 for the refurb. I need a LCD replaced and that was only $150. Much more resaonable than the other places.
