Emissions

Tiger, I believe state to state, Here in washington state its 25 years. That means your not required to have a emission test to get plates, but if the vehicle has smog controls you are required to have them on the car and maintain them. My 81 is no longer a smog car and I've never heard of state patrol checking or ticketing anyone for the violation.

Thanks for the info. What if you're replacing an original engine with one that doesn't have the emissions stuff, eg. dropping in a crate engine without smog controls?

I believe you are still required to have your states minimum requirements.

Tiger,,I agree, it is state to state, however, in PA my 81 only requires a visual inspection to get the sticker for the window if you have tha car registered like any other car. If you go classic or antique, you do not require an emission sticker on the windshield and thus no smog stuff. Check with your state and local inspection station to see what the rules are. Also, there are some limitations on the classic/antique tag as far as it being a daily driver!!

Different states have different laws.
My state does not have any inspections at all.

Cars from 1967 and earlier are exempt in every state including California.

California did have a exemption for any 25 yr or older, until 2005 when then the law was repelled. Any vehicle already exempted stayed, all others regardless of age now require SMOG Cert every two 2 yrs as long as it it is registered in California or a new law gets passed / approved. My 81 missed exemption by 6 months. SMOG varies by state, if they even require one.

First that and now no tax refunds. Wow, does it get any better? Maybe since they're broke, they cut out inspections to save money. NOT. ;help

What really makes me hot is I see more and more people driving in Socal with out-dated Lic plate tags (some as much as an year out) and there doesn't seem to be any re-enforcement and these are newer, high $ cars with a lot higher $$ Lic fee due to the state than our much older car, especially since our registration $ goes down as the age goes up. I hope I am still around when pay-back happens!

That really bites the big one. As much as I loved living in Socal in the late 60s, I don't think I could go back today.
