Any good recommendations for books that detail assembly of a SBC? The more detail, the better. I need to know what tools I will need to buy and/or borrow. Also what tolerances have to be checked, what they should be, and how to adjust them to spec.

Hpbooks how to rebuild your small-block is a good book. This will give the stock angle of it. For super sizing it then I would look in the lines of the How to hot rod your small block chevy.

I have been following your project Joe.

Seems almost the same debate that I had between a 383 vs 400 SBC's. I chose the 400 because of the extra cubes and potential. Good luck with the project!

Anyways back on topic....billybob mentioned a good book by David Vizard.

I used that one for suggestions on torque specs and bolting sequences. Engine blueprinting by Rick Voegelin has been another good one with some general tips on what to watch out for. There is another one "Engine Builders Handbook" by Tom Monroe, he does give info on tolerances and such.

I have been curious on where to find info on specs for engine building, I figure a book from Haynes or something of that nature should have the necessary info we're both looking for. since I am not ready to start I haven't worried about it yet.

I would like to know where I can find info on what clearances I can tighten up for longer engine life and imporved performance. Any takers?

You can follow my project? That might be helpful, since I can't :)

I guess I will finally make up my mind when I find a good deal on the right parts to tackle one item or the other :)

Thanks for the book suggestions, all... I'll have to take a drive to Barnes&Noble, I think...
