Hello,

Are there any member who can expain the difference and FEELING about those engines?

I am driving around now for a fem months with my six-speed coupe C5, I have installed headers and a B&B exhaust, along with a Mc Donaldson intake. My old six-speed C4 from '86, was a tuned one, headers, no kats, LPE accel superRam, rollerrockers, bigger throttlebody.....but less hp than my C5. I think 350hp and my C5 380hp.

But I do not have the same feeling when driving the C5, I do not have the big slamm in the back when I hit the throttle and the feeling driving a rocket. The sound of the C5 heared more as a boxer engine than a V8.

I am not happy, I miss my "old lady"

Are there more corvette drivers who experience this? Or is it me? :cry

I have and 85 with a performance engine built for it. It gives me the perception that it's actually faster than my C5 but it's really not.

Richard.

It's all in the torque... The L98 engine has a ton of it, and a ton of it down low... The LS1 is more of a horsepower engine.

Auto manufacturers found out the Horsepower sells cars.... Even though, torque is what really moves cars:) After all, what sounds better, a 250 HP engine, or a 350 HP engine? But, the 250 HP engine could have 50 more pound-feet of torque, and have it at a lower RPM. And that torque is what sucks you back in your seat off the line.

In case you don't know already, horsepower is actually a calculation based on torque... if i remember correctly, it is:
HP = (Torque X RPM) / 5,252

The C5's chasis refinements also give it less road noise and a friendlier ride so the power is there; it's just not as in your face as the C4's.

Having recently changed from a C4 to a C5 myself, I have to say that the design changes in the C5 have bred a much more well mannered vehicle from the perspective of the driver and passenger, but taken nothing away in terms of performance. It does take some getting used to, but when I can cruise at 90 or 100, and not feel like I'm doing 90 or 100, that's definately an enhancement.:)

Recently traded my '84 on the '97. Is the C5 a nice car? Absolutely.
Do I miss my C4? Most definately. I feel like I'm driving a high preformance Buick now.

I'm not knocking the C5, or anyone who drives one! I'm still trying to find the guy who bought my C4 so I can get it back.

Unless you just have to find your car, look for a 96 LT4 instead.

It would take a lot more than those mods to get 350 HP out of an "86 L-98! You would need heads and cam also. What you are feeling is low RPM torque, which, as everyone knows, the L-98 has. But to be competitive with the LS1 it needs to be efficient at high RPM also. For this it would need better breathing heads and cam, along with the mods you had.

Sorry, I forget to tell you (the ones here know me better) my '86 vette has Edelbrockperformer heads, no EGR, no Airco and a special sequential raceinjection, in total stripped for recudinig weight, it ran 200 mph on the dyno and 178 mph on the street in 5th. It did 4,5 sec till sixty and a low 13 at a 1/4 mile. It has 18"x13" alumium racingwheels fitted with 335x30x18 michelins. Electric steeringpump and electric waterpump. Also special handmade 3way adjustible coil-overs. It had 348 hp and 406 ft of torque.

Hey johnny! Quite the ride. Not to be insensitive, but didn't you have a wee fender-bender with this car?
It must go like a bat...

It sounds like you put big $$$$ into a C4 to get the performance you have now.

Just any FYI, if you did not already know. A stock C5 will do verything you listed above and also pull low 13's in the 1/4 all day....

Good point Tuna. I just have alot of sentimental value attached to that car.
I changed most everything about it to make it "my" car and just really don't like the idea of someone else driving it. Was it the fastest thing? No. But that's not really what I was after.

Here's a pic, there are more at http://www.picturetrail.com/stevecalvin
along with other pictures of the area and general "stuff".
