Anyone know of a good product or technique to clean the A/C, Alternator, etc.? Mine don't look anything close to clean or new, but I haven't found anything that will restore a new look.

Simple Green seems to work pretty well for me. Takes a lot of the grime off.

thanks.... Everything is actually clean, but doesn't look good... I use simple green as well. Is there anything else I can do, besides re-painting or polishing everything?

Buy a can of high heat chrome paint. (It looks like aluminum) Take a inch wide paint brush and go over things like alternator, Brackets, discolored parts of the intake. It works very well. The only place Ive noticed discoloration after a year of driving was the valve covers and the middle of the plenum. (Which is all being replaced anyways) Everything else looks perfect after a year of driving.

Thanks... I am considering high-polishing the alternator, and other easily removable parts.... I don't drive the car during the week anyway, so I figure I can do a little bit every night after work, and hopefully get 1 part per week done... I will paint the A/C compressor though, and anything else that looks bad... I was hoping there was some miracle cleaner I was missing that got the parts looking like new.... I should have known better!

I've heard a lot of good things about Semicrome. It's supposed to be a great metal polish. I'm planing on using it on my engine this winter. You can order the stuff at a horse tack web site.
I've not seen the stuff in any shops, but apparently its around somewhere. Maybe you'll get lucky and find it in a local auto shop.

what is it supposed to do? I know you have to sand down the aluminum to get the roughness out of it before you polish... I am still debating on doing it... to be quite honest, I am afraid of starting on the alternator, finding out it is a real PITA, and not doing any of the other components, which would make the other parts look really bad.

I've never used the semicrome, so I'm not sure just how it works. But I've had pretty good luck with neverdull and a wire brush on the alternator and such.
Just apply the neverdull, let it haze, and scrub it off with a wire brush. It's a lot of work, but it looks pretty good in the end.

My car is just a junky, always broken, driver. But, it has occurred to me more than once how great this engine compartment could look if all these aluminum pieces were subjected to some hours of work with emery cloth wheels followed by polish and a muslin wheel.
If one had a nice car that was not driven much, polishing all the aluminum parts including, plenum, runners, valve covers, a/c mount casting, alternator, a/c compressor and everything else that's aluminum under the hood would be beautiful.
