White 1979 L-82 w/ZZ3 engine
Well, I just found out that I had been had last year when I bought my car. I bought the car from a classic corvette dealer that was recommended by many. They told me that it was original, and I had no reason to doubt them with all the good reviews I got. Well, I have a 1979 vette, and it looks like I have a 1972 engine (had to buy parts). I guess a lesson learned. Oh well, now I don't have to worry about making sure I buy matching number parts. I am debating whether to call the place in Atlanta or not. It has been over a year. Eveyone else, learn from my mistake. It doesn't matter how reputable they seem. CHECK. Enough on that.

My question: Could someone give me the information on my engine and confirm my suspicions. Here is the numbers.

Passenger side top: 14093638
Drivers side Top: F262
Drivers side top below the above number: GM 5.7LG SGI
Bottom of block Passenger side: 638
Bottom of block Drivers Side: _49

Intake number: 10185_63

VIN (not that it matters): 1Z87495449168

Underscore means that I couldn't read the number.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Engine

I found a web site that said to look on the fron of the block for the casting code.
I found the casting code, but that engine code is not in the list. Someone have any other ideas.

Here is the code.
V07O7ZZ3

It is the ZZ3 that should tell me what engine it is, but like I said the we site doesn't have it.

Here is the web site. They do have a lot of information.

More info.
With my four hours of research, I am pretty sure that I have an engine that was built in 1992 (F262 and 14093638 numbers). I still am not to sure what the ZZ3 for, but it may be the ZZ3 GM crate engine. That is the only thing that I can come up with. Can anyone confirm that?

Also, does anyone have any stats on the 92 ZZ3 engine i.e. HP, fuel octane, when searching for parts what do I call it etc. Anything anyone knows about it would be nice. All that I have found is that it is an upgrade from the original engine. Imagine that.

Thanks for the help.

ZZ3

As far as i know the ZZ2, ZZ3, and ZZ4 all came with aluminium intakes. The ZZ2 intake had a bow tie on it.

If you had a crate engine the number on the front pad would start with CE....meaning crate engine or some might say Cheverolet Engine.

Nope - crate engines don't have "CE" stamped on the pad - "CE" short blocks were only produced from 1969-1975 as 5/50 powertrain warranty replacements. "CE" stood for Chevrolet Engine, just as "CT" stood for 5/50 warranty replacement transmissions ("Chevrolet Transmission").

Ok John my 73 has 86,000 origional miles on it. My front pad is stamped with CE 3458 together and then a 9 to the far right. Im guessing this car had a replacement put into it early in it's life. Do the numbers after the CE tell a story? Trans rear end all seem to be numbers matching.

Thanks,
Joe

Ummm, you're responding to a post that's been dead for over a year and a half........

The numbers after CE are merely sequential serial numbers, no relevance to what's inside.

I know it's an old post....thanks for the info...trying to track the history on this vehicle is not at all easy.

Joe, all you can derive from your "CE" number is the year it was produced, which was 1973 (first digit after the "CE"); no way to tell what the innards are without tearing it down. CE's were supplied as short blocks, with the bolt-on parts to be transferred from the original failed engine.

John you have been a great help. Sounds like it may have been put in when the car was fairly new. Im the third owner and the 2nd owner bought it in 76 and claims he never did anthing to to except the for the aluminum heads and manifold. Happy holidays to you and your family.
