Engine Operating Temperature for a C-5; was is normal?

What kind of engine temperature should C-5's run at and what is the temperature the electric fan is set to kick on at. I was setting :ugh in traffic in a constructions zone today and the temperature got up to around 215 degrees; after I got moving it continually dropped to about 198 to 200 degrees, is that about normal? I've also been told it is not a good idea to even think about putting a lower themostat in, is this also true?

My 2001 A4 runs about the same temps as yours, and other posts I have read consider that normal for stock.

I believe the low speed fans kick in at 225 and high speed at 235.

I have heard of several that put in lower T-stat, but you would/should also need to program the fans to turn on at a lower temperature, and that takes some sort of scan tool to change setting.

Hey, Bill, there is a ton of info on this subject. Go to the search option and type in things like "160 thermostat" and "radiator fan on & off".

You will end up with more reading than you could have imagined!

If you have AC on, fans starts.

The thermostat set the temps when you cruse on the hwy. That should be around 295.

Your temps sound perfectly normal...now go have fun and don't keep looking at the temp guage

I put in a 180 thermostat cause I thought it was running to hot for a mere 60 bucks, changed the coolant also, --Still runs at an average of 200, mostly around town. I am guessing that I wasted my time & money---Have Fun !!!

No, you did not waste your money. You just need your fans to be reprogrammed to turn on sooner. With the Powertrain Control Module that is how the fans are regulated.

If you do a site wide search about lower degree thermostats and fans you will find a ton of information. This includes tuners who can change the parameters for you.

Yep...money in the toilet...These bottom feeders were designed to run a bit warm and it harms nothing .....now go drive it and enjoy it without worrying about running a bit warm...they all do it
