Ok, its almost time for the big day, All that remains is to install the fuel line to the pump and up to the carb. then put in the distributor and I am ready to start the engine for the first time . I have never done this before, and I need to make sure I do it correctly so I can get the cam broken in quickly before damge occurs. Are there any good instructions or check lists anyone knows about to help me get it right the first time? Also, the instructions on how to time and install the distributor are a little vague. Can anyone out there give me a good proceedure for doing this? Also, I hear people mention that they set the timing of the engine at around 35 degrees advanced to allow for quick start up and smooth running during break in. How is that adjustment made? Do you just rotate the cap of the distribiutor?

I'm sorry for so many questions, but I have put alot of blood sweat and tears into this and I would hate to wipe out my cam during break in because I couldn't get it to 2500 rpm. Any help would be more than greatly appreciated.

Lets assume you are ready to start up, here is what I do.
Remove distributor and pre-lube your engine; I use an old distributor with the cam gear removed turned by a drill motor. Once you have oil pressure you know everythings lubed up.
With the engine at #1 TDC put the Distributor back in and line up the distributor with the reluctor ring at the trigger position. This will get you in the ballpark. Put on your wires and fire it up.
Right or wrong I have been doing it this way for 30 years and have never had a problem. Just did it yesterday on my Old Yellow Truck as a matter of fact.

There is a booklet out called "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy" that is almost a Bible on how to start up a freshly rebuilt engine. The amount of information in there is incredibly valuable. I think you will find it at major book stores.
