I was wondering if the torsional dampener (harmonic balancer) was different for a 383 and a 350. I was wondering because I was out cleaning my car and noticed that one of my power steering pump mounting bolts was sheered off at the threads. So I was wondering if that happened because of an incorrect balancer. I am using an old balancer off of a 383 stroker. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

drew

Yes, very different! The 350 is a internal balance and the 383 is a external balance. Using a 383 balancer on a 350 will shake your engine apart and probably knock the main bearings out quickly!

Great Thanks for you info hopefully I caught it soon enough.

I will work on that this weekend thanks for you help.

I used it because I was not sure what engine was in it before it broke. it was a month before I tore the old engine apart to scrap the block, I knew it cut a cylander but did not know it was a 383 until I took it apart.

What is the difference between a 6.75 and 8 inch balancer, is one better then the other?

Thanks

Drew

The 383 balancer will have an additional weight cast into the inner ring (IE, a 400 cu in). The 350 will be the same ID on the internal ring all the way around. The diameter depends on your timing cover and timing tab. The smaller balancer will rev quicker but, the larger one will dampen better. If your engine came with the larger one, stick with it

engine did not come with one, which is why I used the 383 one, after if found a cut cylander in it. so I will replace it with a new one in a week.

Thanks,

Drew

As oldchev said ... very different ... big difference in the location of mass ... suggest DO NOT run motor any more with wrong damper ... it can easily cause the crank to break! Suggest put a new timing cover seal in with your new damper.
