i am having a hard time figuring out whether or not i have an aluminum cylinder head or not the car was produced 11/85 it is a 86 coupe..i cant locate the engine vin # so i can look this up

Aluminum heads were introduced mid-year, so i would say no, yours aren't.

Here's an idea, look at them. Aluminum heads have are a silver color while iron heads will show rust somewhere and are probably painted.

Good luck,

My '86 coupe was also produced in 11-85 and it has iron heads. The valve covers for aluminum heads have four screws down the center while the iron head valve covers have their screws through the flange that sits against the head.

So the valve covers for aluminum are center bolt while the cast iron are perimeter bolt?

Yes, Corvette iron heads are perimeter bolt and aluminum heads are center bolt. I'm pretty sure that there are iron center bolt heads that were used on other Chevrolet products like trucks, etc. but not on Corvettes.

From what I can gather the '86 iron heads are the same ones that were used back into the mid to late 70's on varous Chevrolets.
