I just had the Mid America dual exhaust kit put on my 81. And im seeing some black water come out the tail pipes at start up. I used to get a bit of clear water , now I see quite a bit more liquid . Its only from a cold start and the liquid is thin like water but jet black.

Is this anything I should be consurned about.

The startup water is nothing to worry about. Maybe the old exhaust had lots more crooks & crannies to capture the soot? Maybe the old exhaust had some pinhole drains that helped eliminate some of startup water? Or maybe the new exhaust has truly caused the carb to go rich? Or maybe its one of those strange coincidences that the carb went rich rich all by itself, albeit at same time as exhaust upgrade. If you have tracked your pre-duals MPG, maybe a current comparison would indicate if it's really any richer than before. Look at the plugs too. If it's too rich the mpg will suffer and worse; it'll gas-wash the cylinder walls of oil film ... causing premature ring failure.

What do you thing would be causeing the drainage to be black ?

Also im not to well versed in the working of the carborator, is there an easy way to establish if Im running rich or not ?

exhaust drainage

I also just put the Mid America dual exhaust kit on my 80, its not running rich, i do have drainage from it, but not black, i have more now then before, i think its from not haveing all the pld rusted out mufflers on it to soap it up, as far as that carb. there is no way to adjust it.

So your saying chaning the metering rods and or making other adjustments wont be able to lean the carb out at all ? Is that correct , it doesnt make much sence to me.

I was thinking of the mixure screws, for adjusting, there is none on mine, iam sure you could lean it out the way you was saying.hope you get it worked out, having one run rich or even a little rough gets to you.

It's just normal condensate (water) with carbon in it; the OEM original mufflers had 3/32" diameter holes pierced in the front (inlet) wall, at the lowest point, to allow condensate to drain out (instead of rusting out the muffler shell). You can do the same in about two minutes.
