I have a question whether I need an expansion tank on my 72 automatic with no air. I bought a basket case and there was not one attached at the time I bought. So my question, do I actually need one?
If so, can I just buy any aftermarket overflow tank? or do I need the original style?
Why are there 4 spouts on the original expansion tank? I know where two spouts would go, but I am confused about the other two. Can anyone help with this.

Thanks

If you've got no expansion tank, you must have a radiator with a cap on it. If so, the expansion tanks are built into the radiator and an additional one would be redundant and of no benefit.

The radiator does have a cap, but that is where I am confused because don't all radiators have caps?

No. Corvettes with expansion tanks are paired with radiators that have no expansion tanks of their own- and no radiator caps. The expansion tank does triple duty as filling point, pressure relief point and expansion tank.

The typical Harrison aluminum plate radiators found on Corvettes had none of these.

If you see a car with two caps, either the rad or the tank is incorrect, or both.
