I was under my driver's dash today and noticed a plug not connected to anything. It has an orange wire and pink wire with a plack stripe attached to it and is hanging down near the fuse box. I couldn't find it in my electrical troubleshooting manual and there is is no corresponding end that I could find to attach to it.

Anybody have any idea of what it is for?

Bob

OH man I researched this and IF I remember correctly

Orange is constant hot (+)

And pink with white strip I am not to sure about.

Do both have a little plastic clip on the end to connect into the fuse box?

I have to snap a pic of mine fuse box and I know which wires your talking about. The only problem is my camera is on the fritz and I can't upload pics.

I am sure someone will chime in with a better response.

Hope it helps some.

Frank

Frank,

The wire has a clip on the end but it doesn't appear to be the type you would clip into the fuse box but rather appearsto be the kind of clip that would connect to another set of wires.

I'll try and snap a pciture tonight and post it.

Bob

Do you have a light on your hood? Check that connection.

Hey Bob,

I'll look under mine tonight. Come to think of it, I remember having some 'mystery' wires under my dash too.

6 months ago, I removed a few 'extra' wires inside my dash. These wires appear to be the past owners collections of stereo wires and aftermarket alarm system wiring. It was real fun figuring out what needed to get removed!

Now of course I could be wrong with this assesment but from what I have read and learned along my corvette journey is that all vettes are created equal (in the same year ranges)

It was cheaper for the factories to stick in 1 wire harness and just hook up the options that were available in the car that was being assembled. But it didnt just happen to the electrical, so tell tale signs are seen on the body aswell on certain models.

Example would be the rear removable window no longer an option on later model C3 vettes yet the recesses and mount spots for the hardware still exsist.

Try checking the wire diagrams and see if you can match it up.

OMG and I thought bubba did a job on mine!!:eek

I took a peek under my dash and I could not find ANYTHING with that combination of wires.

Then again bubba did a real number on my car.

I wish I could of have been of better help:(

When I was removing the wiring, I noticed some wires that were plugged into my fuseblock via connectors. They did not look very stock, however later I realized that they supplied power for the power windows. (had to go back and re-hook it up)

Anyway, my point is...if you are not 100% sure of what it is, or what it's for, then tape it up and leave it alone until you do. (that's my opinion, tho) Especially, if you want to restore your vette to stock condition.

I'll be looking under the dash in about 3 hours, and will be able to report my findings in the morning.

Bob,

the wire connector you spoke of plugs into a small black box. There are 4 wires coming from behind the fusebox (maybe a couple inches long). These 4 wires end in a white connector which plugs into the black box as well. The black box also has a gray wire attached to it. This gray wire plugs into a connector on the front of the fusebox. (Lower left corner labled "LPS") (?? I remember seeing this last year, wondering what the heck it was.)

I didn't test the box out, but I did open it. Of the 4 wires that connect together (the white connector), it appears that at least 3 of them are performing some sort of relay function. It might be that this is the warning buzzer, but again, I did not test it out furthur.

Maybe someone knows what the "LPS" in the bottom left corner of the fusebox is all about?

This pic is the rear of the box with a part number. Oh, on the front of the box it says "Phillips".

A warning buzzer is a possibility. My car doesn't have any warning buzzers. Does your car have a buzzer when the key is in the ignition with the door open? What about a seatbelt warning buzzer?

Thanks for the help Vic.

Bob

It has a buzzer, cuz I hear it sometimes. If the door is open and the key is inserted the buzzer sounds. (I usually have to wiggle the key though.)

Someone removed the seatbelts sometime ago (my guess is when it was customized into a convert.) I have some lap belts in place now, but not sure if they are original. At any rate, I don;t remember seeing any seatbelt light come on or a buzzer for the seatbelt.

I should have been a little more thorough last night in my testing. This evening, I'll climb under there and see if the buzzing sound comes from the box. Then I'll unplug the connectors in different orders and see if I can make a guess as to what each connector does.

Bob, I will get a picture of one still wired in position. My 82 still has a buzzer for the headlights when the key is off, though the key in the ignition while door is open doesn't work. But at any rate mine is still connected to the box that vmrod put on his reply.
The box is connected to the right side of my fuse box with the four tabs and the two wire connecter (Orange and the other) are connected to other terminals at the bottom. They only go on one way the blade is bigger for the orage I believe. As soon As I get a chance at lunch time today I will snap a pic and try to get it online.
