i have an 84 crossfire, just put a remanufactured engine in it (new plugs wires etc) along with a new fuel pump. the exhaust fumes are nauseating and immediately noticeable. i'm assuming the fuel/air mixture is not right, or the injection is not working right... how much will this cost to get fixed? someone mentioned that the map censor might not be hooked up or something... anybody have a way to check this for a non-mechanic-vette-noob?

also, as a side question... when i start the car it is cold enough outside to see the exhaust in the air. when i start the car it idles quite high and most of the exhaust comes out of the left side muffler (like a lot).. then after a few minutes it starts coming out heavily on the right side... before it kinda evens out... is this normal?

as far as the amout of exhaust from the right side and the left side it should be the same as the exhaust is Y''d at the cat under the middle of the car (at least both my 89s are Y''d)unless your car has true dual pipes

Look under the hood for a disconnected vacuum line or electrical plug. It is rectangular and thin. My car is modified, but the MAP sensor is on the firewall, near the wiper motor.

The '84 has a single catalytic converter fed by both banks of cylinders and a Y-pipe at the rear. I would expect the exhaust to 'steam' at about the same time, but not fret over it, with respect to this issue.

A leak can drop the vacuum to a level that fools the ECM into thinking that you have your 'foot in it', therefore adding fuel, making the mixture rich. You don't want to run rich for a long time, as the cat can be fouled/ruined.

If the throttle bodies were removed from the plate, there might be an issue with them. I have had leak problems (fuel and vacuum) and others have had balancing issues if the TBs were removed. This requires some experience to repair properly.
