Fässler, Rockenfeller Back with Corvette Racing for Petit Le Mans
Endurance teammates rejoin team at Road Atlanta IMSA finale
DETROIT (Sept. 15, 2016) –Corvette Racing is bringing back two endurance racing all-stars to rejoin its already strong lineup for the final championship push in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Mike Rockenfeller and Marcel Fässler will be part of the Corvette Racing roster at Road Atlanta’s 10-hour Petit Le Mans presented by Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort.
It will be the first Corvette Racing event for Fässler and Rockenfeller since they opened the season with appearances at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in the pair of Mobil 1/SiriusXM-sponsored Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs. Corvette Racing and Chevrolet won both events in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) category and has won three races since to take control of the GTLM points lead in the Manufacturer’s, Driver’s and Team categories.
Fässler will team with GTLM Driver’s Championship co-leaders Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner in the No. 4 Corvette C7.R. The trio were class winners at Daytona and Sebring – the second year in a row that Corvette Racing won both Florida endurance classics. Gavin and Milner also won at Lime Rock Park (the team’s 100th all-time) and Road America.
Fässler will race with Corvette Racing at Petit Le Mans for the second time; he was fourth in class during the 2009 race with Gavin and Olivier Beretta. Fässler currently ranks fourth in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s LMP1 Driver’s standings with pole positions at Silverstone and Nurburgring.
Rockenfeller partners again with Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen in the No. 3 Corvette C7.R, which is coming off a victory in its most recent race at Virginia International Raceway. The trio finished second at Daytona to the No. 4 Corvette, which won by just 0.034 seconds in the closest finish in the race’s history.
Rockenfeller is a past overall winner at the Rolex 24 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans – both in 2010. He won the 2013 DTM championship and is a past GT2 winner in the American Le Mans Series and at Le Mans.
Corvette Racing’s next event is the two-hour, 40-minute Lone Star Le Mans race for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship from Circuit of The Americas. The race is scheduled for 12:35 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 17 It will air live on FOX Sports 2 starting at 12:30 p.m. ET with IMSA Radio coverage and Chevrolet on-board cameras available on IMSA.com. The weekend also features a six-hour race for the FIA World Endurance Championship.
MIKE ROCKENFELLER, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R: “I’m very proud to rejoin Corvette Racing at Petit Le Mans, and I’m excited to race again at Road Atlanta. It is where I made my first start in an endurance race, so I always have good memories of the track. Competing with Antonio, Jan and Corvette Racing at Daytona and Sebring was a blast, and the Corvette C7.R was very fun to drive. We had excellent pace and reliability at both races. Hopefully we can be just a little bit better and win Petit Le Mans!”
MARCEL FÄSSLER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R: “I’m really happy to get the opportunity again to drive with Corvette Racing again at Petit Le Mans. It is a pleasure to drive the Corvette C7.R in these long-distance races. Road Atlanta is a familiar venue and a real challenge. The goal will be to support Oliver and Tommy in the GTLM Championship and help them score as many points as possible. For me personally, it would be great to win Petit Le Mans for the first time. It’s my hope that we accomplish both of those tasks.”
