While I was in Iraq my father thought he would take my 81 down and get the oil changed. Good ol' Dad looking out for me. Well Im back and ready to get it ready for winter so thought I would dump the oil and spin a new filter on. So got the drain pan, poped open a beer, and turned on the football game on the TV in the garage. Sounds like a really pleasent afternoon huh? ....FAST FORWARD....Well after the screw driver I drove in the side of the filter DEMOLISHED the filter I was forced to get the chisel out. After about 3 hours pounding on it it finally broke loose and I could spin another filter on. My team lost the football game and my beer was warm.....enough said.:cry

moral of the story.....1/4 turn after contact!

Sir,
With all due respect:
A) You own a Corvette.
B) You made it back from Iraq alive.
C) Your father has your best interest at heart.
D) Single football games only matter in the playoffs.
E) The other 23 beers in the case should still be cold!!!
"NO HARM, NO FOUL" If it weren't for days like those, good ones wouldn't be good.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I agree with craig32, outside of having to destroy an oil filter,he did what you asked, maybe not the way you liked it, but he did it anyway..and he did not harm the corvette!
happy motoring!!!

BTW thanks :pat :pat

And you didn't come home to this!! :upthumbs junk!! p.s. WELCOME BACK!!

Let me clarify my post. My father had my best interest in mind...Its the tune and lube place that changed the oil and tourqued down the filter I was directing my comments to. Just wanted to vent alittle with people that have "been there done that" with difficult situations with thier vehicles.

Where I come from

screw drivers are for screws

Welcome back to the States. By chance you didn't see someone over there wearing an L81VetteRegistry Hat??

When I first got RARE I took her into the local Chevy Dealer for their express oil change and lube. It was a good chance to inspect the underside, while they changed the oil ;)

Well, when I went to change oil :mad I too found the oil filter put on by king kong.. I used everything thing I could get my hands on, including the filter :mad... Screw Driver through the side and oil everywhere, but it worked... I've done it before years ago, agreed it's not the correct proceedure, but niether is allowing King Kong to put the oil filter on ;)

When you said "screwdriver," I was hoping it was just a change in plans regarding the cocktails!!! OUCH!!!

Screwdriver isnt the best oil-filter removal tool but the filter wrench didnt work. then I tried the strap wrench. That just crushed the filter. With the filter crushed and leaking I resorted to the screw driver. It went from bad to worse then.

and Bud, I visited the corvette registry online alot from Baghdad, but didnt run into any other members..

You know..when thinking back and talking about other people not properly working on cars brings me back quite a few years ago when I did the brakes on my Mother-In-Laws car. when she brought the car back from a quick run to the store she commended me on a great job because her car stoped better then ever..the only thing was the clunk clunk clunk sound she was getting. When I went to inspect I found that 3 of the 4 lug nuts were still on and the 4th was bouncing around in the hubcap. I guess I shouldnt be so quick to judge others. Just was a little steamed the other day. No harm no foul.

Hey, I wasn't picking on you - I've been there myself with the screwdriver method. The 'chain-link' filter wrench works best on a stubborn (or overtightened) filter if you can get your hands on one. I was hoping the drive with the new oil and filter and several more of the beers when you got home would've helped ease your pain. I've wasted whole weekends waiting for people to help me with projects!

Yeah, I've been there with the screwdriver method myself. I think that was the last time I changed my own oil, and that was about 30 years ago!
