I thought I should post this and possibly show my ingnorance in the hope that it may help someone else save themselves alot of time. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting any air flow out of my top vents when the fan was on. I also couldn't get the highest speed of the fan to come on. I first attacked the high fan speed; I purchased a new relay, which is mounted on the firewall above the condenser, from my local O'reilly auto parts which they had in stock. I took all of the connectors apart and sanded all of the connections. Any where there was an electrical connection in the area of the fan motor or wires going to or from, I cleaned the connection. I don't know if it was the new relay or the cleaning of the connectors but the high speed now works great. I then decided to attack the lack of air out of the vents. I took of the dash cover on the passengers side and was going to take a look at the controls on top of the heater core box and see if I crimped a vaccume line or something when I changed the heater core a few months ago. When I took the dash pad off (this is the one with the pockets in it) I decided to take it to my work bench and clean it all up. I got to looking and noticed that the pull lever that I thought openned the fresh air vent, actually controls a butterfly vent inside the duct. Guess what? It was closed and so was the one on the drivers side. I was really starting to feel stupid now. I started checking the center vent (above in instruntment bezel) and found that there is a control (under the vent toward the drivers side) that opens and closes this vent. And yes, it was closed too. I put everything back together and turned the a/c on with the high speed and the air flow was great. It is nice when you can fix something and it does not cost a fortune.

I 'm at the stage now waiting on a switch. which pull lever are you talking about ?cause gotta pull that dash pad next ,the volume I'm getting ain't about spit. I had to jump around the console switch to get high it was working great [fan] while I was working on other switches local parts store had me exticed said he could get it next day wrong switch came in can't get mine set me back a couple days

these pull levers...are these the ones at the bottom of the dash? if so...mine wont budge if i pull them or push them...advice anyone?

I don't know if your 74 is the same as my 70, but I had to disconnect the cables from the shifter console and let penetrating oil run down the inner cable. I did this while alternating working the cable in and out. At first it was very difficult but I did this on and off for a couple nights and both sides work fine now.

I probably spent a total of an hour doing this. Boring.....but it worked.

I suggest if you're going to do this that you not use oil, stop by a motorcycle, ATV store and buy some spray graphite for cables like throttle/clutch cables and use that. Oil will eventually dry/gum up and you'll have to do it again, graphite lasts forever, same time hassle but worth it in the long run.

These are the pulls that look like the old type of door locks with the plastic knob that screws down over the threaded rod. Except these are a little bigger. When I pulled off the pass. side dash front, it all came off with the dash. The knobs are connected with hard linkage and operate a butterfly inside the vent. After I cleaned them and oiled them they work easily but before that I thought I was going to break them every time I pulled them.

Mine are also very tight, and hooked up incorrectly. Pushing or pulling the "knobs" doesn't move the butterfly one bit. I couldn't figure it out so i just opened the butterfly and put everything back together.

Does anyone have a picture of the backside of the dash pad? {correctly installed of course :) }
