In the near future I will be installing another set of ZL1/L88 Fender flares on Dave Bacher's (TZracer) 71 bb coupe. I have already done the rear, but will be doing basically the exact same thing to the front.

I realize there is quite a bit of "do it yourself" interest out there in the C3 world. If you like, I can schedule this event around an upcoming weekend where anybody that wants to travel can come spend the weekend with me and lend a hand, take some pictures, and go back home with the know how and confidence to tackle your fender flare job.

Is there any interest in this?

I have to first put my 90 back together in the next couple of weeks, bond the nose back on Dave's car, then get set up for the flare job.

Just reply here if there is some intereset. I live in North East Florida (Orange Park). I would do this over a Saturday, then a Sunday afternoon.

Let me know.

(of course I will document all I can here on CAC with photos and details, however, it would be better if somebody else could take the photos and notes while I work).

Chris

Chris,
Do those flares help with you are driving in the hurricane?:s :J

Hurricane?.........actually yes. You see, wider fenders allow wider tires which make the car stick to the ground better.........thus, making it safer in a hurricane!

Bob, I am sure that there will be enough extra fiberglass/filler material flying around that we could go ahead and rebond your left rear quarter at the same time. We should be able to get both cars in the shop at that same time, and grind a little here, fill a little there, sand a litte there, and kill two birds with one stone.

Plus, you will have fun working with the fiberglass. It is really some amazing stuff.

Great idea Chris! Kudos!! :upthumbs

_ken :w (Man, I gotta move to Florida.) :L

HowBout I fly you up here to Syracuse and you show me on my car. I'll pay with beer and barbecue. :crazy Your flares came out awesome!!!

It could be arranged, just substitute the beer with plenty of sweet ice tea (southern style), and I am there!

Hopefully we get sombody to take gobbs of pictures and documents the steps one by one so that anybody can duplicate the process. The problem I have while doing this sort of thing is that my hands are messy, I am grimmy and dirty, and I don't have the extra time to sit down and take good quality photos, etc.

I'd be interested if you have not completed the project before I return from vacation.

Chris, When are you thinking of doing this?? I have several 3 day weekends in Nov. and Dec. Please keep me informed.
Thanks,
Rick

I will keep you guys updated right here.

I was already planning on doing the flares/finishing the flares by doing the front of the car. Now, we made a little extra deal where basically I will be doing the entire nose bonding, door fitment, then some other small details. If you have never been involved with "hand" fitting the front fenders and door gaps before, you are in for a real lesson.

Rick, and Mr. Cool, the timing should be about right. I HAVE to get my 90 Vette off the jackstands and out of the center of the shop. Right now it has no trans, and no rear diff or rear suspension in it. I ran into a snag on the 3.75 rear gear set needing the bearing kit ordered (add 10 days).

So, this project will get the full on Green in Novemeber, no doubt. I am hoping by the second weekend, or third weekend in November.

Dave is doing some pre-prep work to the nose of the car, so, I should not have to worry about some minor details with the upper support brace, etc.

We now have basically all the materials (fillers, adhesives, paper, etc), it is just a matter of time and space.

It will be fun!

Chris,

Any further info on a date? I have Friday 12/6 off and could probably swing a trip down there, assuming the wife will let me get away.

Bob

This will be an ongoing effort. I am shooting to get the car in my garage 11/16. From there I will better know the time schedule. That may be a perfect date, so we will see.

Man..I love you guys!! And the Camaro guys think that Vette guys are loafer wearing, latte sipping light weights!! Chris..you are THE man!!

Although I would give anything to be part of this, a few thousand miles separate us. Would there be an opportunity for someone who is planning to attend to try to make a credible video tape of the event?? I can certainly tell you that I would pay for a copy of the video to offset any costs involved. That type of "hands on" work would be pretty cool to have in a video format.

Great idea. Dave has a good video camera that would be perfect for this. There are several precautions to keep the dust and grime out of the camera, but I think we can work that out.

This is now on the to-do list with the project.
