'glass repairs for screws
Hey ptuner11,
This is a common problem for all 53-67 Corvettes (the inner doors were made of steel from 1968 on). The doors on most of these cars have been messed with a lot, so the door panels have probably been on and off many times.
There are three ways to approach the problem (OK, better, best):
1. cut small squares of thin metal and pop-rivet them to the door over the existing door panel mounting holes...then align the panel and drill holes for the screws. I don't like to do this because I hate to see metal crap pop-riveted to a Corvette!!!
2. go to the hardware store and buy some plastic screw anchors for drywall that are smaller than the door panel screws (it should be the yellow ones). Drill out the original mount hole to the correct size for the anchor, then install the anchor with some light tapping with a hammer. Install the the panel and screws. The anchors will only last for 3-4 removal & installations of the panel, though!
3. really, there is no "repair kit" for 'glass. Hit your local auto parts store for some fiberglass mat, resin gel (not just resin...it's too runny on the vertical surface), and hardener. Repair each hole on the inside of the door and also on the outside as you you would do any fiberglass repair. Align the panel, drill the new holes, and install the panel screws. This is the most CORRECT and ORIGINAL way.
Since you say it's a driver I'd go go with #2....but I've given you the options that have worked best for me!!!
Best of luck!
