Finally, pistons are in....

Seems like I've been working on this engine a loooong time and I still have a looong way to go. I think though that the block prep, crank, pistons and ring install were the most tedious of this rebuild. With all the clearances & measurements over and over again. From this point on I think it'll be a lot less mental. It's a big relief for me getting to this point.

Lookin' good. I know what you mean too. Due to my son's graduation and track and field regionals I haven't been able to do more than look at my engine since I brought it home from the machine shop. Just thinking about ordering the bearings ect today.

What kinda compression are you going to have.I thought every one was building low compression motors because of our gas

The pistons have just a slight dome. Compression should be between 9.2-9.4:1 with the 110 cc chamber heads I'm using.
 
The paint in the intake area is "Glyptal" and it provides a smooth surface to facilitate oil return. I'm using it in the timing chain area and underside of the valve covers. I've also seen it applied to the heads(valve spring area).
 
I've always worried about that paint coming off over the long run and plugging things up. Is Glyptal a special formulation for this application?

I guess it will never be any cleaner than this so now is the time to paint it.

It is a "special" type of paint Tom. Although I think it might be more of a coating than a paint. From what I understand it's used to seal/weather-proof transformer electrical connections. I first read about it in the book "How to Hot Rod the Chevy Big Block". They recommended using it I think I got it from Eastwood. It's a shame they only sell it in a pint can though----you only need a little, even applying 2 coats!

It dries very hard.

John says he got his from Eastwood too. I have "How To Hot Rod A Small Block" around someplace. It probably says the same thing. It has been many years since I read that book. I'll do a search tomorrow.
