Well today was Fire up day for the 502... John Lolli and Kid_Again came over to lend a hand. Also Barry K and his wife Linda. John and Kid had arrived first so we got started. Every thig was hooked up Vac gauge timing light tech etc.
After getting the fire puter outer stuff in order we went for it. On the first crank she fired off and ran for about 5 seconds then quit. I cranked again and nothing. We put a screw driver in the coil wire and checked for spark at ground.
Nothing.....
So I traced back to the ignition start line for the MSD.. which is a 16 gauge red wire into the MSD box.. that feeds to the ingnition circuit and I have a small inline 20 amp plug in mini fuse. That sucker was blown. ?????
Ther is another wire that is spliced in with the MSD line and that goes to the oil pressure fuel pump turn on switch. So I disconnected that wire from the MSD ...replaced the fuse and put it directly to an aux battery hot terminal.
We cranked the motor and she fired right up...All of a sudden,,,the Kid start's yelling and frailling his hands to stop the motor which I did.. So I said ..what's wrong?? The Kid says......The braided Stainless Steel oil line that comes from the back of the block and goes to the pressure switch and gauge was somking and red hot and about to cook and burst into flames.
Luckily.. the Kid caught it...I think I have a bad pressure switch as it's shorting some where and drawing current thru the SS line to complete the circuit. Any way it was nasty..... it really got hot and was smoking like crazy
We disconnected the switch and removed it and all was fine. She fired right up again...we then set the timing and and ran the motor up to aound 2000 revs and varied it back and forth for about 15 min. Then we adjusted the idol circuit with the manifold vac gauge. Man.. Those sweet thunder pipes are sweet.
The Dewitts radiator is fantastic..the fans came on @180 and the motor never went over 185*.. and it was hot today... Theres still some minor drips here and their to deal with amd the oil pan dip stick mount that's secured to the pan is dripping. I'll deal with that top morrorw. Never saw that before.
After we were about done Barry And Linda rolled in.. They had been caught in traffic on the way up from Delaware.. John had brought hoggies and soda for all of us. We had allready eaten.. Barry and Linda looked hungry so we broke out the hoggies and they went at it.
After lunch Barry and linda came out to the garage and we shot some video of the motor runing. As soon as I edit it down I'll post it. Thanks again to Barry and Linda for driving all that way in traffic to help out.
And Of course Thanks again to John Lolli for helping out with the fire up and bringing the Sugger Hill Hoggies and drinks ....and Kid_Again for also helping out including sweeping the garage floor as well as spoting the wire fire and the oil leak...
