Well today was Fire up day for the 502... John Lolli and Kid_Again came over to lend a hand. Also Barry K and his wife Linda. John and Kid had arrived first so we got started. Every thig was hooked up Vac gauge timing light tech etc.

After getting the fire puter outer stuff in order we went for it. On the first crank she fired off and ran for about 5 seconds then quit. I cranked again and nothing. We put a screw driver in the coil wire and checked for spark at ground.
Nothing.....

So I traced back to the ignition start line for the MSD.. which is a 16 gauge red wire into the MSD box.. that feeds to the ingnition circuit and I have a small inline 20 amp plug in mini fuse. That sucker was blown. ?????

Ther is another wire that is spliced in with the MSD line and that goes to the oil pressure fuel pump turn on switch. So I disconnected that wire from the MSD ...replaced the fuse and put it directly to an aux battery hot terminal.

We cranked the motor and she fired right up...All of a sudden,,,the Kid start's yelling and frailling his hands to stop the motor which I did.. So I said ..what's wrong?? The Kid says......The braided Stainless Steel oil line that comes from the back of the block and goes to the pressure switch and gauge was somking and red hot and about to cook and burst into flames.

Luckily.. the Kid caught it...I think I have a bad pressure switch as it's shorting some where and drawing current thru the SS line to complete the circuit. Any way it was nasty..... it really got hot and was smoking like crazy

We disconnected the switch and removed it and all was fine. She fired right up again...we then set the timing and and ran the motor up to aound 2000 revs and varied it back and forth for about 15 min. Then we adjusted the idol circuit with the manifold vac gauge. Man.. Those sweet thunder pipes are sweet.

The Dewitts radiator is fantastic..the fans came on @180 and the motor never went over 185*.. and it was hot today... Theres still some minor drips here and their to deal with amd the oil pan dip stick mount that's secured to the pan is dripping. I'll deal with that top morrorw. Never saw that before.

After we were about done Barry And Linda rolled in.. They had been caught in traffic on the way up from Delaware.. John had brought hoggies and soda for all of us. We had allready eaten.. Barry and Linda looked hungry so we broke out the hoggies and they went at it.

After lunch Barry and linda came out to the garage and we shot some video of the motor runing. As soon as I edit it down I'll post it. Thanks again to Barry and Linda for driving all that way in traffic to help out.

And Of course Thanks again to John Lolli for helping out with the fire up and bringing the Sugger Hill Hoggies and drinks ....and Kid_Again for also helping out including sweeping the garage floor as well as spoting the wire fire and the oil leak...

I'm sure you will sleep good tonight considering it's almost done and the most stressful day is over with... Now you get to be like the rest of us and just drive it.... Dave

Cool Barry.....:beer

Mark,

Glad everything went resonably well, and that Kid-Again was there or this post probably would have been real ugly.

Lets see you have about 25 days untill Carlisle, you only have to put about 20 miles a day on the car untill you hit the 500 miles on the new motor.

Glad it went good in the end, take your time on the video, you have more important stuff to do tomorrow.

Congratulations. Always good to have another set of eyes around when you start one up for the first time. Not sure about the 502 but on my 572 there is a small Oring that fits around the dip stick tube. When I removed the the dipstick to fit the headers the Oring stayed in the hole and I probably would have pushed it back down into the oil pan if I had not noticed it.

Congratulations! It is always a great feeling when you finally start the engine for the first time and every thing is OK.

Hope to see your car at Carlisle.

You're taking the "hot car" theory waaaay to far if you're setting fires!!

Congrats on the first start. It's kinda like magic when you turn the key and good noises arrive.... makes all the hard work seem worthwhile... :)

Congrats on your first fire and breathing life into that beast! Now you can get all the little bugs out and she'll be good to go.

Could be the op switch is bad ... BUT ... you may also have a ground problem and the braided oil line was serving as ground strap. If you don't have already, suggest you get a dedicated ground bonding strap between block and chassis. BTW, In addition to its heavy black Negative wire, I run a dedicated 16-18G ground wire from one of the MSD box's mounting holes to chassis ground.

Mark as the fellow above stated it sounds as though your braided line is acting as a ground. Did you reconected the original motor ground when they switched the motor?

PS congrats on the first fire of the motor.

Are you running a msd dist? I am still trying to figure out what springs I am supposed to use in the MSD dist

Sounds like a great weekend, all things considered. Can't wait to see the vid and hear yours, I just heard IH2LOSE and I can't wait to see and hear yours.

Thanks everyone for your kind words... Now to get the bugs out.

Jack: The pressure switch is bad ...no contact between the "C" Term (Common or Realy coil feed) and the "NC" term (Normally Closed). As far as grounds go..I'm a big ground nut.. Both the 502's motor mounts have heavy ground straps coming from 3/8'' bolts into the motor to the moutor mont frame horns. The horns were ground down to bare metal and the grounds attathed.

There is also a second birdcage ground that was added to the passenger side birdcage frame to chassis ground. Also a ground strap was added to the driver side front frame horn to the radiator support.

Remember...The fuel pump is turned on by a relay.. This relay Coil pulls less then and amp....which is what the pressure switch is operating.
The SS line is in contact with the block which is ground. The Case of the Pressure switch is metal and in contact with the SS line. If you touch the 12V wire to the case of the pressure switch ...you have a dead short. I think there is an internnal resistance causing a leak to ground.

With the Pressure switch out of the circuit.. the system runs fine..

I think I heard it already

Mark,

Congrats on your first engine start, I'm glad to hear the everything went well. I am looking forward to your posting of the first video, however I think I might have heard it already. During the weekend at the Chevy Show in Epping, I'm sure I heard a wicked BB start up, over the rumble of the cars on the drag strip.
;LOL

Looking forward to seeing her up close and personal at the upcoming show in Carlisle. Drive safe

Thanks Wolf....Barry is sending me the disc and I'll put some short stuff together. I plan on making another one in a week or so. We were kinda burnt at the end of the day and really didn't take our time lining shots up.

But I'll tell you what....those Sweet Thunder pipes and the Cam in the 502 sound real good.. I mean any motor head could sit and listen to that for a long time... It's like Bob's Video only slightly lower in sound level as he had his baffels off.

Once you here it you fall in love all over again.....

I have decided to leave the glove box out as well as the radio & Speaker for Carlise. Since after I return.. Kid_Agian will be Air Brushing on the center vertical console ...and doing some work on my clock. And I'll be adding new interior. Also the paint chips and scratches will be left in as there is no time to get the body touched up.

So when you say your looking forward to seeing the Vette up close and personal...It ain't gonna be a " Playboy Center Fold Chickie".......Maybe just a Vegas Pole Dancer.....:L
