Hello CAC Members!

I'm a fairly new member! Been reading alot but no posting since signing on a few months ago. I'm 44, and this past spring purchased my first vette. It's a 78 coupe and it was definetly one of those spur of the moment kinda deals. I graduated high school in 78 so it's got the sentimental value thing going on. And like so many others from my era, I always admired the C-3's.

So the story goes something like this. I hear about this guy selling an ole black vette, no engine, for $2,500. I figure it's gotta be a waste but what the heck. I'll go check it out. When I get there, it looks pretty good. Much better than I imagined. Even has the rear spoiler which gives it that awesome attitude! He tells me she's been sitting up for about three plus years. I spend about five minutes looking it over even though I really have'nt done any kind of serious auto mechanical work in some 20 plus years. Seems like I've been driving "toyota's" forever now. Anyway, it appears to me to have never been wrecked, but I do recognize more rust than I would like to see. I figure, what the heck, I need to get my hands dirty again. It's time to get back down to my roots and bring this black beauty back to the streets where it belongs.

So now, after about 6 months of admiring the poor thing out in my own back yard, and with my three days a week softball addiction now on the rocks until March, I'm finally getting involved and restless to see my future pride and joy begin it's rehab! This past weekend I tackled my first challenge by seperating the body/chassis. Needless to say, it didn't look to promising when 7 of the 8 body mounts snapped right off. Anyway, with that behind me now, I'm not discouraged in the least bit. In fact, the frame is really not that bad now that I can actually see it up close. I've started to assemble my long shopping list. My first obsticle is the fuel tank. I see where the 78 - 82 tanks were discontinued. I've located an 81 tank but nobody I've talked to seems to know for sure if it will work on my 78. So, my first of probably may questions to the loyal and knowledgeable CAC members is just that. Can anyone tell me if the 81 tank will work on the 78?

Thank's for reading and please help me get this baby back on it's wheels.

Steve

Hi Steve, I just checked with the Corvette parts interchange book and it states that 1978 thru 1982 tanks were the same. 18 gallon capacity and all outputs are the same. Hope this helps. Fred

Thanks Fred very much! I finally 'wised up' this morning and called the local Chevy Service Department and the guy there also said the 81 tank should work! Now hearing it from two sources I think it's a safe bet! Your time calling and sending me a reply is very much appreciated! Have a great day!

:w Hello Steve and welcome to the Corvette Action Center......Congrats on the Vette.......Enjoy !!

I wish I had the space to seperate my body and frame!

Welcome!

Welcome to the CAC and thanks for the story. Congratulations on the '78 find for $2500. So, how was (is) the motor? Original? Turn over?

It's obvious you are doing a total re-do on it. Stock? Hot rod? Fun driver? Good for you. I, too, wish I had the garage space. Good luck with your project, have fun, and for some great inspiration, check out 67heaven.com.

Just remember-double your budget and planned time investment. You have at least found us here at CAC-that's a great start.

Is there actually a book that has listings like this? Can you point me to it? Sounds like something that comes very useful. Thanks!

RoadRunner78-

Welcome aboard. You're a brave man to tackle a project like that. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I, too, have a '78. Bought it on a 'spur of the moment' thing last summer. I had just sold my Harley and my MG Midget in an effort to "simplify" my life.

I had to replace both rear calipers. Looks like the fronts will need doing next spring. I took it in for a front end alignment and found out it had been in a wreck and the frame needed straightening. Ka-ching!

The seats were all messed up. The leather is OK, but the frames were bent. Must have been some big dudes in it at one time. I have a local interior shop refurbishing them. $1,000!!! ouch.. Next spring I will get them back. I am going to try to redo the carpet on my own then.

What I wish for Christmas is that somebody would completely do a frame off restoration on a '78 and film every step. I would gladly pay for a movie like that. Or even pictures! I'm not the mechanic I was 30 years ago.

Welcome to the CAC!

Take photos! We'd love to see the progress.

Good luck with your rebuild.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and warm welcome! I really appreciate it a whole lot! I already love this forum because I feel pretty sure, that no matter what challenges lie ahead, someone here has already crossed that path and is more than willing to help me out of a tough situation. And we all know, in this day and age, that is an extreemly rare commodity! Bless you all and happy holidays!

To answer a few questions that were mentioned; One of the reasons I suppose I got my vette for $2.5K was because it was engine-less. And my ultimate goal is to have a beautiful street rod ready and willing to jump when I ask it too! Kinda like the Harley guys. Mostly used for nice, enjoyable drives through the country side on beautiful days!

I remember back in high school, I had some good buddy's that built a few hot rods. I always wanted one but never had the money to do anything significant. I drove a six cylinder Nova! The cragers on it looked great but I was not up for any challenges if you know what I mean! And not to say I'm loaded with $$ now to do a whole lot, but I think I can swing a few nice upgrades and enjoy the ride I never had. My two daughters are finishing up in school (FSU) and my 2001 Tundra is paid for so why not.

After searching CAC for advise on which crate engines seems to be reliable, powerful, etc., the one I'm leaning on purchasing right now will be the GM ZZ383/425HP. I was going to build my own but right now buying a crate seems to be the way I want to go. I love the big crank and torque this engine puts out. I did get the original TH350 automastic tranny with the vette and for starters, I'll probaby just put in a B&M or Trans-Go kit and see what happens. It 'looks' to be in good shape but I realize it's probably not gonna be strong enough or have enough gears to support 400 plus horses and 3.73 gears. So my long term goal will be the later model 700R4, a Powerglide or something in that range.

Speaking of the gears, the book shows 3.08's in this model vette but I really don't know (8 bolt ? - isn't that unique?). I have the differential sitting in the garage now and not a clue to what lies inside. When I pulled it out last week I noticed some oil on the outside casing which I guess really doesn't tell me anything. I have a softball buddy that is a mechanic and he told me to buy the gears and bearings and he will set it up for me but to be honest, I don't know if the posi will work with 3.73's. If I gotta buy the carrier too then I may wait but I really don't want too. I feel like now is the best time to rebuild the differential and put in the gears that I really want. I still need to also find out which manufacturer to go with, Ratech, Richmond, etc.

Well that's where I stand for now! I'll keep ya posted. Any information, insight will be greatly appreciated. And thank's again too everyone for the warm welcome!

FYI

According to information obtained from "Corvette by the Numbers" publication, it states that starting with 1978, the normal 17 gallon tank was replaced with a 24 gallon "fuel-cell". I have a '79 and it has a 24 gallon tank. Believe me, I know every time I visit the Shell station!

Also, don't think a powerglide trans is going to handle 400 plus HP any better than a solid TH350. JMHO.
