Flooding Problem

Need some advise as to what could be going on with a flooding problem I'm experiencing on my 88. The car floods when the fuel pump power is connected. If I disconnect the fuel pump from the power supply the car will start right up and run fine until it runs out of fuel. If I connect the fuel pump once the car starts it stalls within in 3-4 seconds from too much fuel delivery.

So far I have changed the fuel pressure regulator and set fuel pressure to 40psi and re-set the TPS to 0.54v.

Look forward to some assistance figuring this one out.

Regards,

Fred

By "flooding", do you mean the cylinders are filling with fuel? If that is the case it sounds like a leaking injector. As a matter-of-fact, what else could flood the engine except a leaking injector? :confused

Ken

By flooding I mean too much fuel being delivered into the cylinders at a certain time. I don't think its an injector, might be wrong. When I disconnect power from the fuel pump and the pump is not providing pressure the car runs fine, no misses, revs fine, you can shut it off and wait for as long as you want and it will restart so I don't believe I have an injector leaking. Any tips on testing the injectors to see if they are leaking or not??

Out on a limb but we're dealing with a car with a similar problem.

We fixed it by replacing the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay.

We did them both at the same time due to wacky diagonstics but it did clear up. When your injectors ARE opening up from the message from the ECM the amount of fuel is FLYING through.

But my suggestion all along with our problem was a bad fuel pressure regualtor.....but you've replaced it. Now Im still learning and by responding and hearing others opinion through topics like this I think we could all learn.

Could it be to much power is being fed from the relay and/or is the fuel pump drawing to much? Has your fuel filter been removed leading to a direct feed from the pump?

Im really curious with stuff like this, it will certainly help me diagnose things in the future!

Thanks for the reply. The fuel pump is new so it should be ok. I'll double check and run a quick test. The fuel pump relay is original so I'll have a look. Like you this stuff really interest me, but I'd like to get a speedy fix for this annoying problem, looking for any and all input to see if I can put this particular problem to bed.

Regards,

Fred
