I've got the carpet out of the front of the car. The floor pans appear to have been coated with something originally, but it is breaking up and coming up when I apply the shop vac to it.

I was thinging of recovering it with either a spray on insulation or Por15 (I have the metal pans). What do you think? Any better ideas?

Hi Bob,

I am going to coat my floor in my '69 C10 project with Por 15 inside and out. It would sure eliminate any rust that could form from a future weatherstrip leak. You might look into one of those pre-cut sound and heat barrier kits while you are at it. They are thin and not supposed to affect the new carpet installation.

Sounds good Bob. Don't forget to tape your seams.

Got the aluminum tape.

I'm a little concerned about running that foil backed insulation under the center console with all of the wires and the possibility of shorts. Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Bob

You could just wrap any connector that has any bare metal showing for extra assurance. A little electrical tape should do it. I really don't think you will have a problem unless there are damaged wires or connectors.

I was a little worried because some of those relays, etc., are pretty close to the floor and could touch the electrical. I'll check it out when I pull it off.

Just a thought (69myway)

Bob,
Before you cover/coat your floor pans, have you given any thought to that new stuff people are using to cover the inside of pick-ups truck liner?
I think it's called TUFF-STUFF, or something like that?
I know Chris (69myway) put it his deck lid for his convertible.
Hopefully he see's this and responds.

My thought process is POR-15 to take care of the small amount of rust on the inside that appears to have been caused by moisture in two small spots where the passengers put their feet when they sit in their seats on rainy days with wet feet.

Then I'm up in the air. The POR-15 doesn't need to be top coated here so I could leave it alone, cover it with some type of spray on insulation or this truck stuff, though it might be overkill in this area particularly with how tough the POR-15 is.

I think I am going to run the one-sided foil backed insulation under the console and other areas where it could ground out. Tom suggested taping them off and while this is a good idea, the potential for the tape to come off over a long period of time concerns me. As many people have said, a Vette fire is not pretty.

Next weekend I have Friday off. I am going to take a wire brush to the floor pan to get the rest of what looks like factory paint off and then POR-15 it. I guess I'll have to make up my mind shortly thereafter.

Anybody else have any thoughts.

Bob

Bob,
when I cleaned up my interior, I pulled up what appeared to be large rust flakes. Actually, it was the thick, tough, sound deadener. (looks kinda like a roofing shingle) Anyway, I bought some from JC Whitney to replce it, and also some heat insulation.

I don't think you'll have a problem with the foil backed insulation. Just use common sense when installing it.

In right over a month, I'll be back into gear, fixing up mine again.

mine was a little thicker than tar-paper. (The stuff they use for roofing). Inspect the flakes carefully. Hopefully, it will just be the old sound insulation.

Replacement floor pans

Does anyone out there know were I can get replacement floor pans for a 1976 corvette????
