Im ordering 40 series mufflers for my 73 vette, but i dont know what style for the inlet and outlet pipes. Does anyone know what works best?

Thanks

Not sure about a 73. Do they come thru bumper cut outs????

Are you putting in new pipes as well. If yes, then it shouldn't matter on the inlet side, just adjust the pipe to fit.. On the outlet side, visualize where the muffler will sit, and where you want the outlet to be.

I've got 40's with offset in and center out on my 81.

what does your car sound like?
:confused

My '82 is bone-stock, and while I want it to 'sound' better, I don't want it to sound like every-other 5-liter Mustang, running-around town, either.

have been thinking about Ultra-Flows, but not sure.....

My 81 has flowmasters on it, it doesn't sound like a mustang though. Mustangs have a longer tailpipe after the muffler which I think gives them a different sound.

It doesn't sound anything like a mustang.

Hmm, how to describe. Its tough to describe with words, but here goes.

With the headers, and 40's, i've had two people ask what cam i was running (its stock). Basically, at idle, its boom boom boom as each of the plugs fire. I think the headers along with the muffler makes it sound more lumpy then it really is.
Standing behind at idle, its fairly loud, with a low throaty tone.

I wouldn't recommend 40's if you have any concerns about having a loud car.

Flowmaster has some sound clips on there site. I'll see if i can compare those with mine and see how close they are to mine.

Most of the time I like them, but sometimes, mostly on long trips or on the highway, i wished i had something a little more muffled.

That's what I'm looking for:
just shy of a fuel funny car staccato idle is fine, and since we only take the Vette out TO/FOR a ride to fully enjoy it, loud ain't a problem!!!!!

Jumping in here since I custom bend exhausts at my shop.
For Flowmasters (or similar) on a '73, you'll need offset in, center out. Typically the OD of the exhaust is 2", but any competent shop can fab up some adaptors (better to have new pipe bent, tho). While I like Flowies alright, it seems EVERYBODY and their brother/sister have them as well. Flowmasters also have some longevity issues (welds on the baffles breaking causing ANNOYING rattles), but then every muffler has a service life. What I've sold in addition to Flowmasters are Twister race mufflers. They look similar to glasspacks, but have a spiral baffle with no packing at all, and are designed as all-out race mufflers. I put a set on a C4, and they were VERY aggressive sounding, and had a unique tone. Check out the picture to see the fit.
Just FYI :cool

Just a PS.. if you want a better pic, drop me an email, and I'll send in that way

I have fm40's with true duals on stock manifolds. As far as the volume level, forget trying to use a cell phone. When I pull from a stop, there isn't a head that doesn't turn. I got the same reaction when leaving a Corvette Cruise Night. My wife wont even ride in it.:D

Ok, Im getting excited...the baby is at the exhaust shop and he is making a 2.5 inch custom exhaust (patterned after the stock one) and is using flowmaster 40s on it...those with my headers and 234/244 duration @ 50 cam should make and interesting combo........cant wait to hear it...after reading all these replies Im getting real excited.....:_rock

I have them...

i have headers and flowmasters with factory tips for my '73...last winter i installed new carpet...along with a layer juke backing and layer reflectix ...i was trying to beat the heat and i did succeed to a point...it just seems that heat will find its way after time.....BUT...i also did the rear area underlayments....and what i did was sound insulate...i have no problem hearing anything with the tops off and crusin....and it sounds sweet .
i tryed to lighten this shot so you could see mine....
this winter im having it all removed and re-done with stainless pipes. kind of a Christmas gift for the lady!
( and the passenger side muffler is a little crooked, maybe im too critical, but this is a Vette!)
good luck,
Chas:w

Walker Super Turbo

Call Summit Auto Racing Equipment (akron Ohio) 330-630-0250. I wanted to put Flowmasters on my 73 but according to them Buying the Walker Super Turbo took all the guess work out of measurements. He was right! Took my mufflers off and slipped these right on and fit like a glove. About 2 hours on my back but what a pleasent sound.. Idleing just a slight rumble 1st 2nd and 3rd. sounds fantastic when getting into it...I highly reccomend the Walkers

Joe: Any chance you could post a photo of the mufflers installed? I have a 73 also. I would like to see how they fit with the 73 tips installed. I do not see the Walker super turbo muffler in my Summit catalog. Do you have a part number from Summit?
Are you refering to the Dynomax Super Turbo?
Thanks!--GPB

George,

I left my disk at work , but can take a shot on Monday. The part numbers are as follows: WLK17765 SUPER TURBO 63 TO 73 VETTE RIGHT SIDE. MLK17764 SUPER TURBO LEFT SIDE. The muffler oval is 14 inches instead of 16 inches but they suggest the reducer wlk41960 and two exhaust clamps (nice ones)wlk33230..they wrap around the reducer and two pipes and locks them in solid. The Tips slide right back on and mine were even on each side. I hate exhaust work and never have luck but this was a pretty easy job. You can email me at byrnejoe@sbcglobal.net and I will send you a shot on Monday. The total was $298.61

Geroge,

By the way Summit suggested this muffler only because they are a direct fit without taking the chance on piecing a system together if that is any help.

Joe

Joe: Thank you very much for the information! I will e-mail you!-GP Black
