HELP! Keyless Entry System (FOB) Problems

After retraining my keyless door opener, it opens the the doors, windows etc, but after a few minutes it seems to loose the frequency and I have to retrain the door opener. I brought a used remote door opener from ebay, trained it, and still it stops working after a few minutes, so I know it can't be the door opening device...any ideas?

This is one of the toughest things to diagnose on these C5's.
Make sure your battery (under the hood) is fully charged.
Make sure the batteries in the remotes are good.
Make sure the contacts inside the remotes are clean and are snug with the battery.

I can't think of anything else except make sure you have the correct remotes for your car year. You can check with the dealer parts dept. on that.
Are your tire pressure sensors working OK? If they are then you can rule out the receiver being bad since they both operate on the same frequency.

No. it did not. I went back through all the previous discssions on this problem from the forum, and it seems every one either had to buy a "BRAND NEW" remote or they had to replace the black box behind the drivers seat. One post indicated I should reseat the wires in the module behind the seat. I found the box, but its darn hard to get to the wires, and I think I may doing more damage than it is worth! C4/C5 tech has some good tips, but the bottom line is that I think I can hear GM saying "Customer Says" on Monday. While going through the 54 pages of "posts" I noticed that people have been getting the fule gague problem where it goes to empty. I have this from time to time, and it just goes away. As a previous C4 owner and a new c5 owner I am very disapointed with the problems I have had with this expensive car here is a list since 2000

1) Windows have airleaks when driving over 50 mp
2) Right window actuator(sp) failed
3) Fuel door actuator failed
4) All four of my wheels needed the sway bars replaced
5) Replaced Weatherstrip on roof
6) Replaced Weatherstrip on right window water leaking in
7) Fuel gage intermitantly has goes on empty when not empty
8) Current- FOB not working
9) Current- Rocking driver seat
10) Current- small rip in corner of drivers seat
11) removeable top begining to crack

Keep in mind car has 27,000 miles is loved better than any woman, and is kept in garage at home and at work....

HI there,
Honestly, I would suggest that the receiver memory has a problem retaining the code frequency. This receiver can be purchased and installed by you relatively easily.
For your fuel gauge, you can have the PCM reprogrammed with an updated program to assist in the problem.
The rocking seat carries a TSB to replace the seat adjuster.
The seat covers are not that expensive, about $175 if memory serves. Although, the cushion underneath is probably worn also. Tears usually happen when sliding in and out of the car, I know I am very guilty of that one.
But for your primary concern, I would suggest the receiver.

Try replacing the battery in your remote. I had problem with my 02 and that simple
fix took care of it.

Fob trouble

I've been experiencing the same trouble with my key fob remote. It started to not unlock the door on very cold days, while acting normal when it was around 60 degrees. Anyway, I replaced the battery, and was able to re-sync the transmitter to the car (the horn would chirp) and the door would unlock for about 5 minutes, then nothing.

I took my fob to a dealership and had it tested. They said it was fine and that the receiver in the car probably needs reprogrammed, the same conclusion as c4c5specialist. c4c5specialist mentioned "This receiver can be purchased and installed by you relatively easily." I'm wondering if anyone has more information on this receiver and where/how much one could be purchased for. The dealer quoted me $75 to reprogram the receiver. Any one able to provide a technical explanation on why this is happening? Electronics typically wont "forget" something unless the EEPROM it's stored in has a power loss or gets scrambled by a power surge. Could this be a sign of a bigger problem?

I had a problem with mine not remembering the code after 5 minutes. I purchased a new remote and all is good. I wonder if there isn't a problem with frequency drift in the remotes. There is an adjustable crystal oscilator inside that is the used as the reference for the generated frequencies. With all the shock that these things go through it's no wonder they don't drift more often. I haven't gotten a chance to bring the transmitter into work to see if it has drifted off frequency and I'm not sure what the reference frequency would be. I'll let you know what I find out.

My Fob solution

I finally made it to the dealership this week to have my receiver reprogrammed. Unfortunately they discovered that the fob transmitter was also bad (which previously tested OK) so I was forced to drop $118.00 on the transmitter, and another $37.00 to have the receiver programed to match.

3 hours and $150 later while stoping somewhere for dinner, the doors refused to be locked from the transmitter. :eyerole Returning an hour later and then using the keyless entry several more times througout the night went without difficulty. I have my doubts as to whether this issues has trulley been corrected. I guess we'll see in the coming weeks.

tmdmike: a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) is a service notification made by the vehicle manufacturer regarding some non-critical part failure that the customer can typically have fixed without cost. It's like a recall, only not nearly as important, so customers are not directly notified by the manufacturer. I have the same seat movement and have yet to have it corrected.
