after the shop replaced my rear bearing last week a lot of the looseness feeling went away which was good but I am still getting a shifting feel and a cluck noise at times, especially around turns.
we put it back up on the lift again this morning and rechecked the rear shims and just as you suggested in my previous thread a number of them are missing on the left rear.
i'm getting the car into an alignment shop on Monday for a complete 4 wheel alignment.
Can you give me all the proper numbers they should adjust the car for?
I remember you mentioned the toe-in for the rear should be 1/16" split evenly on both sides so each side is 1/32".
How should they set the front?

if it makes a difference, the tires I have on the car are 205 75-15 with the standard steel wheels and hubcaps.

thanks for your help!

i don't know if i need additive or not but I do know that with the missing shims it's allowing the ?control arm? to shift about 1/2" from side to side as there are not enough shims in there now to hold it in place. This should account for the shifting feeling I was getting and the loud clunking noise as it shifted and hit against the frame.
I put question marks around the control arm above because i'm not sure if that is the proper name of the part that is shimmed up. i tried to identify the part from the LICS catalog but wasn't sure if i idnetified it correctly.
I'm sure JohnZ will know what part I'm talking about that is shifting on me and needs to be reshimmed

yes John will give you the specs, he might also suggest (as I would) that you have a shim pack in hand when you go to the shop seeking the alignment, chances are they do not have them on hand.

Barry Get a new shim pack NOW

even if the shop is familur with vettes the shims they need are not some thing they normally have on hand.

John Z is up in Canada prepairing for the NCRS national convention and thats whay he has not responded to you yet

I called the shop back yesterday after reading CT's post and they said they do have the shims. Since this is Fri morning the car goes in first thing Mon. morning I won't have time to be safe and order up any from someplace like LICS because it won't get here in time. Do you think any local speedshop would normally carry proper shims and what kind would I ask for if I called around to try to find some locallly?

Barry

Pretty much any supplier can next day them to you and you will have them on saturday morning before 11 am.Try zip or paragon and explain you positively have to have them on saturday for monday morning

I looked in the caralogs I have and the Shim sets between ZIP and LICS look very different. Any suggestions on which might be more correct or better to get or will either one work fine?

from ZIP it's on page # 227 in the 2003 cat, - part #SU-525. $35 set

from LICS it's in section 51 of Cat#22 - part #29B - $40 set

These shims are unique to the '63-'82 Corvette, not likely that a local speed shop will have them, although a larger Chevy dealer probably will. I'd check there!
:)

Well, if the shop knows what car you are bringing, and they claim to have the shims on hand, you should be ok, but if you want to be safe: you want slots not holes, unless you want the alignment boys cursing you and gives them less to mess up:

Paragon PR #: 3618K - $28.00; PR # 3619K (same but SS, I think) - $32.00

i couldn't find my Paragon cat but they look like the slotted ones I ordered from Zip. The Zip ones are Stainless Steel and were $35.00
i'll have them tomorrow so in time to take with me to the shop first thing Mon. morning

I believe you're looking at the right item in both catalogs, the LICS shows the '63 as well as the '64-82 in their picture, and they're different. The '64-82 they show (29-B, I believe) are they type with the holes, as opposed to the ones in the post above with the slots. That's why they may not appear the same to you I think.

Either type will work, the slotted ones are easier to install. Some folks prefer the ones with holes to prevent loss in case the bolt loosens.

Be sure to order the shim pin with either one, especially with the slotted type. Just a long cotter pin that goes thru the frame and the lower hole to prevent just such a loss in case something works loose.
:D

Hi Ron

The ones I ordered are the slot type and I did also order the shim pin for each side.
I don't think it had a pin in it before which is probably why I lost some shims.

I called an excellent restoration shop I really trust while I was waiting for some answers on here and they suggested the slotted type and the also order the shim pins.

Thanks everyone for your help!!!
