For the first time in its long history, the Ford Mustang will ride in NASCAR starting next season, bringing the modern muscle-car wars to the racetrack.
The Mustang will roll out on a limited basis in the Nationwide Series. Testing of the first cars will start this fall.
The Dodge Challenger, the Chevrolet Impala SS and the Toyota Camry are expected be the Nationwide cars next season, NASCAR.com reports.
The iconic ‘Stang has a long history in racing, including NHRA, Grand-Am and Formula D drifting.
“We had been talking with NASCAR for some time about Mustang as part of its vision for a ‘muscle-car' rollout for the Nationwide Series,” said Brian Wolfe, director of Ford North America Motorsports. “We both saw it as a way of differentiating the series from Sprint Cup.
“We loved the idea, so we jumped on the chance to extend Mustang's racing legacy to a new series reaching a huge and loyal audience.”
The Mustang will join the Fusion (Sprint Cup) and the F-Series (Camping World Truck Series) as racers from the Blue Oval.
