well, found a mistake I made during my motor clean-up project. One of those live and learn lessons I guess......

the sparkplug shielding brackets that bolt to the exhust manifolds (the brackets that the shielding pieces themselves attach to via wingnuts) were looking pretty bad when I had removed them so they were some of the batch of pieces that I glass bead blasted to clean them up. After blasting them they looked real nice so than I got the bright idea that to retain that nice clean look I would clear coat them.
Ummmm, don't do that........
It took about 3-4 minutes after I first started the car up after getting my carb back that I saw smoke pouring up from both sides of the motor. Turns out that the brackets get REAL hot (yeah, big surprise huh, they are bolted to the exhaust manifolds. DUH!) and the heat just cooked the clear coat paint right off them immediately and that's what was smoking.
So now, instead of nice, clean-looking, shiney and bright brackets, they are a nice yelowish color from the discolored clearcoat.

Well, it's not really that big of a deal and unless you look carefully you wouldn't notice it but I do because I know it's there but this was a lesson learned the hard way which is pretty much typical for me.

Oh well, next time I have to order up some parts maybe I'll just get a set of new brackets and put them on to replace these now but it's no rush.
I guess I better get it done before this years Carlisle so that anyone one of you forum members that may stop by to say hello won't have to see my mistake and point it out to me. ;LOL

Bet your heart skipped a beat when you saw smoke coming from under your hood! :L

Well, since I had repainted a number of things, including the block, I wasn't TOO concerned. I figured it was some paint cooking off from something. I was only concerned WHICH paint it was until I figured it out.
Luckily, this was the absolute least important of anything I had refinished so once I saw what it was it didn't bother me TOO much except the general principal of it and that I made a mistake.
Initally I thought it was the coating on the manifolds themselves until I saw the clear coat actually bubbling on the brackets.
Considering the amount of work that I did that I've never done before, this being the only real mistake i've come across (yet) makes me pretty happy with the whole job.

Yep, humans do that!

FWIW, I think you did an excellent job based on your lack of experience.

Doug

thanks Doug :)
I'd like to think I did a half-way decent jpb on it too actually, consider my lack of experience. I'm sure it could have been done better, and faster, with experience, but overall I'm pleased with it.

well, I WAS pleased with it until about 2 days ago. Someone posted up pics of their 327/365 motor they just had completely rebuilt/restored over on the "other" site and man, that thing just looks PERFECT (except for the red-painted dipstick). I mean, as much improvement I think i made on my motor cosmetically, that guys redone motor makes mine look like a rusted heap straight out of the junkyard where it's been sitting for 27 years!

Barry,
I won't turn the key until late April. So keep on making those little mistakes until I see my car again. Love your posts!

I'm getting close to the time when I took it in for a paintjob last winter. And I monitored your progress. Time does fly!

thanks Paul, but i'd rather try to AVOID the mistakes whenever possible, thanks!

yep, time sure does fly. this time last year i was 6 months away from my paint job completion! ;LOL
