I was amazed but I found the top half of the tank sticker still on top of the tank it is kinda neat to actually find it there after 32 years. It is not very legible but but you can make out enough of the numbers to know it is for my car.

Very cool! It sure beats the heck out of finding nothing! Could you see anything was there before you dropped the tank? Or couldn't you see it at all until the tank was down?

Did you even have to drop the tank? How did you get it? Did you know it was there before hand? I would hate to drop the tank on my 71 only to find out there is nothing there.

I didnt have to drop the tank, although I thought that was the only way to get at it. I took off the gas door and the rubber neck seal that goes around it and shined a flashlight on top of the gas tank. I saw a piece of paper folde over on the drivers side top of the tank. I had my daughter (little hands needed) reach in and carefully pull up the paper, it was covered in grime but I was able to brush off enough dirt to get at least the ID number, trim and paint and some other information. It only took about 5 minutes to actually do it.

This is like the Holy Grail. I felt reverent when I viewed the pic.

I think that little girl of yours needs rewarding for her diligence and doing a job that only SHE could do ; take her out for an icecream of her choice tonight ...as many scoops as she wants. A tank sticker is a time for celebration ! (ill bet your daughter just wouldnt understand about these sort of middle-aged idiosyncrisies a man goes thru, would she ?!??). Glad you got what was left of it before it deteriorating completely.

I had told myself that I would leave well enough alone, but now I just might have to go find out if it's there or not.

Tank Sticker

When I dropped my tank before pulling the body off the frame, I found my tank sticker in pretty good shape. With it, I discovered what options were ordered w/ my Vette. I had no idea that I had the Gymkhana suspension until transcribed the order codes from the tank sticker! The sticker is very fragile, and I had to handle w/ care, but it is readable. I now keep it between pages in my service manual.

If you can get to your tank sticker, and remove it without damaging it, I would highly recommend it!

Very cool.

How hard is it to drop the tank? Can it be done by one person?

I dropped mine by myself. The key is to make sure there is no fuel left in the tank.

If you do plan to drop the tank, you might want to consider replacing the fuel pickup screen, the rubber hoses that connect the tank to the steel lines, and the gasket under the tank lid while you are that far into it. It would be a full day job to drop and replace the tank however

Believe it or not, I was able to remove the tank sticker from my '72 through the gas fill door. By pulling the gas tank boot down and squirming my hand above it, I finally felt the envelope the tank sticker was in. Spending enough time at it, I managed to work it off the gas tank. It wasn't easy, but I have pretty big hands, so it might be easier for someone with smaller hands.

The tank sticker on our '74 had already been removed and the fellow we bought it from handed it to me.

That sounds really cool. I think I'll look for mine as soon as it gets a whole lot cooler (maybe Oct.) :L

Save the Wave :w

Well I took off the black boot and looked in on the left side with a flashlight...it's there...and it's going to be there for awhile...I have no plannings on taking down the tank...in the near future...
