I'm not sure if this topic is appropriate for this forum; I couldn't find the right place for it. I was just wondering where you guys mount your front plates. In California it is required to have a front plate and I have been pulled over ONLY because I did not have one mounted. They look terrible in my opinion. Is it legal to put it behind the windshield on the dash? Where do you all put yours? :confused Thanks.

In Texas it's a requirement also, of course we don't actually use them, lol.

They look even worse on the dash than they do in the holder, I would suggest putting it on and adding one of those clear covers like Corvette Central and Ecklers sell. That way it looks decent and keeps the locals off of your back. :)

Well, I'm not so sure that it looks better in front. I think it looks VERY ugly in front, on the dash is only ugly. Thats just a matter of opinion, I guess. What do those clear covers look like? Anybody use em?

We have the same law here in Ohio. I believe the "clear covers" you refer to are the ones that maintain the contour of the front. I have one on my '94. I like it much better than just having the flat appearance. I like to remove the cover and clean the area about once a month. It gets dusty and bugs tend to meet their demise in the cracks. But, it doesn't take long and it's well worth the effort. I have even received a few compliments on the aesthetics of the cover.

Required in Washington as well. I think mine is in a box somewhere in the garage. :)

Yea, I know what you mean. But, I do not have the stock "filler" that goes in the space and I'm not sure I want to go to the trouble of buying aftermarket and having it painted. However, I might try to get away with it if I had one. I have the "filler" on the front of my '01 Bonneville. So far, no problems. But I'm told that Vettes don't seem to get by.

Having (or not having) a front plate has been an on-going discussion on lots of forums. IMHO, the front plate does not look that good, but if the state law says you have to display a front plate, then the best way to avoid being hassled by LEO's is to put it on. Soem folks can get away with no front plate for what seems like forever, but others may not be able to drive 10 blocks without getting stopped.

Personally, I down want to be stopped and risk getting a ticket for something as silly as this. Not worth the problems and the (WA) $48 ticket. Some cops may be a bit forgiving if you have the plate sitting on the dash or in the car, but if you get stopped by the same cop a few days or weeks later, he may not give you another chance.

I don't believe that any type of plastic license plate covers are legal in Calif.
I'd give the CHP a call before I buy one just to be sure. Most policeman I know are under the impression that Corvettes are exempt from displaying front plates, but there is always the exception. :(

Rabbit, let me know if you do contact the CHP. I'm hoping I will get the chance to ask an officer some time soon.
By the way, the ticket isn't so bad. All you have to do is go to any police station near you, show them your car with the front plate attached, and mail a $10 check to the court. Still a hassle, but it might be worth it. For now, my plate filler is hanging up on my wall.

I just wonder if anyone has really looked at where the front plate goes on the C6? All the pictures I've seen show nothing and nowhere to mount one that I can find. I just can't see that toothless grin blocked with a plate. Can't see one in the windshield, either. Maybe Hib has the answer......... :confused

Guess I should have read the C6 Forum. This has already been addressed. Sorry to have jumped the gun.........

Correct, see CVC 5201e.

Ask a cop and you get one cops opinion. The vehicle code is online so you can check it for yourself.

You just made my case for looking it up yourself.

Talked to CHP & any type of plastic cover is illegal in Calif. I also have my plastic cover in the basement. Has been there for 7 years.

Front license plate filler

Hi, I have a 87 coupe that has always had a front license plate.
My understanding is that here in WA state if your vehicle is over 30 years old, you are not required to have a front plate. Of course I am going to verify that. But just in case,
I purchased a front filler piece for it off of ebay but I am not sure how to mount it.

It looks like there are 2 special fasteners required for the bottom 2 holes , but the holes are not accessible once you put it in its spot . Does anyone know or have pics of what is supposed to be used to hold it on?

Thanks, in advance.

This doesn't answer the question but I need to state I've never seen a front plate that looked good on any Corvette .In New Hampshire on my wife's C4 state inspection allows the plate to be UNDER the front cover (amazing). My C6 I tape it on to get my state inspection sticker then put the plate in the trunk .I didn't design the car I only drive it :)

I have a front plate mount for my '12. I can run with or without the plate simply by unscrewing a couple of wingnuts and removing the plate.

The Mount is made by Top Flight Reproductions and is reviewed here on the CAC. It's a very clever idea.
