I just noticed on my '76' that the nuts on top of the front shocks had come loose. There is a nut on top of a second nut, it acts as a lock, but both were loose. I tightened them up but I was wondering how tight they should be? Since the rod is the center of the shock I don't want to get them too tight.

Not that familiar with your 76, but I've double nutted many times. It predates the Nylock nuts etc. I'd say loosen em both up then snug down the 1st one about 12 - 20 ft lbs or so. Then the trick is to hold the first with an open end wrench while you tighten the 2nd against the first. Do NOT crank em both down. You want one to tighten against the other.

I'd put a little loctite also if they tend to loosen.
