Front speakers under the dash

I took another plunge with my 'lil beasty. I am getting rid of the stock stereo. I purchased a Pioneer DEH-P550MP deck and a pair of Infinity 6953i speakers for the rear. I will go with some more Infinity's in the front once I figure out the type and how to put them in. This weekend I will finally have some good sound. :J

So here is my questions. What type of speakers are in the top of the dash? And how do you get to them? Rip apart the dash? Do the front speaker grills just pop out to expose the speakers? My cheapo haynes manual says the speakers are in the door but they are not.

The speakers in the dash were only for the non-Bose systems; Bose systems did not use those openings in the dash pad. As a matter of fact, if it was not equipped with a Bose system, the holes for the speakers weren't even cut out. They are outlined and relieved for the speakers, ready to be cut out, but they weren't open unless it was a non-Bose car.

As for removing the dash pad, it's a piece o'cake! Remove the two screws at the base of the windshield in the defroster vent area, then remove the screws at the front underside of the pad (you may have to remove the bezels to get at the screws for the pad). With all screws removed it's a simple matter of lifting the pad and pulling it towards you out of its retaining clips. Be careful with it; it is only a heavy type of faom based stuff and you can break it pretty easily. Don't do that! It's also a very expensive item, the last time I saw a price it was over four hundred dollars. :eek

Hi,
At the moment I have my dashpad off. (unrelated problem) It is my wife's 88 coupe with a Bose. It has just a plastic dummy speaker cover with cloth over it. They are held in with 3 screws from the bottom (once you get the dash out). I was going to add 2 more Bose speakers since I had it off (run 6 speakers). There is no room for me to do that.

I would suggest that you take the dashpad off before you buy your new speakers and see how much room you have or what will fit.

I would also suggest that you have someone help you pull this off. It is nothing more than styrofoam (like a cooler). My wife and I each pulled one side and it came out smoothly, no cracks or breakage. It is the first time I have pulled a dash on either of our cars.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

There are already speakers installed. I assume it is factory because it is the original ACDelco system. AM/FM with Cassette. So I can just pull the plastic speaker grills off. Oh well, its a Corvette. :s

JonM - Thanks for the link. Some pictures are worth billions of words.

Will the speaker grills just pop out? If so, I may be home free because there are already speakers there. I guess I am about to find out.
