Front spring replacement on 86 C4

Has any wrench head replaced a front leaf spring on a C4. The repair book talks about a tool to relieve the tenision on the spring before removing it. Is there away to do it without this tool?My spring has cracks in it and my front end sets lower than it should . If anyone has did this before could you give me the skinny on how to....Thanks for any Info....Bob Yates
