I had a pretty bad day today, one of the reasons being that I came back to my car with a badly damaged windshield (a rock maybe?). Can I replace it myself? Where should I look for the windshield (junkyards, online, dealerships, etc.)? Eckler's price is about $450, is that reasonable? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Call a glass company. Its going to be cheaper and of course easier.Usually what you would pay for a windsheild ,a glass company can sell you one and install it for the same price.

Let the pros do it! They got the proper tools, and consumables and they do it all the time!
Mine was $250, installed! They came to my driveway and did it in about an hour and a half.

That is exactly what I'm lookin for. Who are "the pros" though? For that price I'm willing to drive pretty far (I live in Los Angeles, California BTW).

I'd just look in your local yellow pages for a Safelite, or Nations Autoglass.

Drop a quarter on your local insurance agent and ask who they recommend.

I also had a bad day. Today a semi truck tire slung a rock on my windsheild and it cracked it. I called safelite. Depending on which windshield glass that you have will determine the cost. Non solar tinted glass will cost $202.03. Solar tinted glass will cost (HOPE YA'LL ARE SITTING DOWN) $2377.91. Oh and by the way, trim pieces are not included in these quotes. Trim cost between $200.00 and $300.00 extra per piece.

Windshield glass replacement is usually covered under the Comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy (assuming you carry Collision/Comprehensive) whe you get a crack or chip that cannot be repaird by one of those Novus-style deals. You should only have to pay the deductible amount and the insurance covers the rest.

If you want new trim and the old stuff is servicable, you may have to cover that out of your pocket. But definitely have a reputable glass shop do the work. This is a fairly complicated job and glass shops have the right equipment and materials to do the work.

I was told that the trim is hard to remove. Safelite told me they can't guarantee safe removal of old trim. If it is damaged in the process then it is the owners responsibility to purchase new trim.
