Frost lines & foundations - will it ever get cold??

I have noticed on the thermostat of my dehumidifier in my detached garage, the temperature shown has not dipped below 54 deg f. w/ the doors all shut.
It has been colder than that - in fact, I have opened a bay door and the temp then has dropped lower - closer to air temps...
Is it because the entire back 1/2 of the structure is buried in the "hill" up to 5 ft of the back wall?? Even the sides, up towards the front of the sides, may be as much as 2 ft to 6" depending... I am thinking that the Earth's natural heat is warming it inside when it is all buttoned up - Is this the way it is??? :cool

The internal temperature of most caves is 55 degrees all year round. The earth has a thermal mass that serves as a natural heat reservoir. The sun will warm the roof when it's out and most likely you have some good insulation on the rest of the building.

I have R 13 or 17, I forget which - inside the walls behind the sheetrock - it was the highest of the "R" values I could stuff into the cavities made by the 2x4 construction - Anyways, my "Cave" is 55 degrees then?? - all year?? Decent!!!!

my house has geothermal heat which uses water from a well to heat/cool the house for that same reason ie the earths temp is a constant 55 degrees.
there are several houses built "in ground" not far from me, the only drawback is lack of view

You are correct!! When spring comes you will see a reverse affect; You will not be able to get the temp above 55 if it is buttoned up. It takes a long time for the mass of the concrete and the earth below to warm back up.Later, Tim

At the end of the summer, I noticed the thermostat in the garage on the dehumidifier was showing about 86-92 deg. but @ 45% humidity :eek
It was actually quite comfortable at that (dew) point
