fuel gauge whoes

ok ever heard of this one?,i take the fuel pump assembly out of the car ,turn key on gauge works fine ,then put the assembly back in car gauge doesnt work!Any ideas at all here?????

You said the guage works. What does it read? (Yes, I've heard of that.)

yeah it works out of the car, when i move the float up and down ,the guage in car reads correct ,but when i put in back in the car nothing .still reads full?

If it reads full in the tank, but works OK out of the tank you have a continuity problem.
With it disconnected, your gage reads full, right? The same as it does in the tank.

My 84 when it reads 1/4 full it is actually empty.
