fuel guage problem

When I purchased my 95 convertible the gas guage showed empty and the range showed 305. After driving across country these numbers had not changed. I took it in to a local Chevy dealer and was told that the sending unit was bad in the tank. They also told me that they were no longer available thru GM. Upon driving away I noticed that the guage was showing about three quarters of a tank. (which was about right) I thought maybe the shop had cleaned some contacts or something and it would now work.

No such luck. It has been stuck on three quarters ever since.

How big a job is it to replace the sending unit?

It's actually one of the easiest change-outs to do in a C4 Corvette; you don't even have to bend over.

I'm going from memory here, so bear with me.

The sending unit is part of the fuel pump/filter (sock) arrangement in the tank itself. To access and remove the unit, open the fuel filler door and remove the rubber surround that encircles the tank filler neck. You can then see the bolts that must be removed to remove the fuel pump/sending unit from the tank. You'll also have to remove the fuel feed line as well as the return line, and the electrical connection. The pump/sending unit will then be ready to remove from the tank.

Carefully lift the assembly from the tank. You notice as you get the pump/sock/sending unit near the top of the tank, it will be bent slightly, so you will have to move it around until you are able to remove it.

I'll have to go to the garage for further information - that's where my manual is located.

I hope I've helped somewhat. And hopefully someone else will offer their advice before I get back.
