I have been trying to dianose my non working fuel guage (64). Following are some things I've checked and some questions I have.....
1. Using John Z's 100 Ohm pot dianostic tool connected at the tank (tank disconnected) I can manipulate the fuel guage from empty to approx 1/4. Is this any indication of a bad fuel guage? Why only the small amount, could the pot be malfunctioning? Dig Ohm meter shows 97 Ohms on pot at it's maximum advance.
2. Using a dig. Ohm meter at the tank sender (veh. wiring disc.) I get approx 39 Ohm with approx 1/2 tank. This confuses me because as soon as I connect the tank and turn the key the fuse blows, without being hooked up the fuse stays intact. Plus as stated above I can hook a pot up to the wiring and get a reading at the guage. I thought the sender in the tank could only go "open" and not short out.
3. Last but not least I would like confirmation on the connections at the sender. There are two prongs of different sizes, presently I have the brown wire going to the larger of the prongs and the Black/p wire going to the smaller diameter prong. Black spade terminal is going to ground.
My best guess when all is said and done.... I need a new sender. What confuses me is that when I first bought the car a new sender was installed and within a few miles the fuse was blown. I've not looked into this since that time as I've had other priorities. Is it the old story...I don't want to think a new part could be bad?
Any answers or suggestions? Thanks...Dan
