I want to convert my 1979 block, 383 to fuel injection eventually. I know there are some aftermarket kits from companies like holly, edellbrock and a few others. Is there a cheaper way to do this and retain the performance of these other systems?

Or should I just start saving up some cash to get one of these things?

I put a TPI in my 383 vette 3 years ago and If I had it to do again I would use Holleys new stealth ram summit part hly-91504201 for $2289 and would have saved money. I bought several units from ebay to get the proper combination of parts I wanted and used Holley Commander 950 electronics which are programmable with a laptop and very user friendly Holley tech support is great.
depending on what year vette you have you may have to replace your gas tank for a proper tpi setup. you will love the TPI especially if you match it with an OD trans. Holley did not have the complete system on sale I bought one of the first 950 units sold and have been using it with no problems. I do have pictures but do not know how to make them appear in the post. :confused :bang

Is it a lot of work putting in fuel injection in a shark? What is involed? Any modifications you need to do? What do you need to consider when thinking about going to fuel injection?

Personally, I love my carb. :)

well id do it all over again if i had to,i absolutely love fuel injection in this thing now,its a pleasure to drive plenty of torque, and great gas mileage now.If you can do it ...do it.Im a mechanic by trade so the swap wasnt too bad for me,i also went with the 700r4 and it realy drives much better now.Ill be building a 391 stroker this winter so i might swap to a stealth ram also,or a modified lt-1 intake.Stallion if your ever down near atlantic city way you can check mine out.

I see what you mean. I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad. The only thing is, I'm stock all #s matching, so I wouldn't want to do a major mod like fuel injection. But it definitely does sound like a great idea. I would if I could, but I wouldn't want to do that to my Vette. I'm sure you understand. :)

I could take a day trip down to your area. It would be nice. We could go cruising. Seriously, there are a lot of CACers from Jersey, we should get together for a summer sunday cruise. Wouldn't that be a good idea?

If you're on a budget but have the skills, there's always MegaSquirt, a DIY EFI controller that supposedly can be put together for $150.00.

There have been reported installations on an '84 and '88 Corvette, at least. I believe there has been some discussion regarding MegaSquirt on this forum as well, try an archive search.

Interesting...

Does anyone have more info on this?

Adding EFI to a Chevy will be the easiest EFI and least expensive conversion you could possibly do. (The big block is a little more difficult if you want to use junkyard parts but still doable)
I am a MOPAR man and there is NOTHING available unless you have a $3000 budget.
That being said it is still A LOT of WORK.
Here is a short list of what you have to do.
- Change fuel pump efi needs an electric pump and higher pressue
- replace intake with TPI setup or modify existing intake to accept fuel rails and fuel injectors
- wiring harness
- computer and proper programing
- o2 sensor added to exhaust

The simplest was is to get a complete TPI setup from a swap meet, e-bay or junkyard. There are a few companies that make wiring harnesses for this conversion. You couls use a GM computer but i would like something user programmable like the MegaSquirt, it think holley and accel also make something.

Check our the megasquirt link in the other post there is a lot of good info, tips adn links there. Also there are several booke out on how to do the conversion, your library may have them or look in the automotive section ar Boarders or B&N.

For a first attempt I see a lot of complete holley projection setups on e-bay for a good price. There are Throttle body setups, not the best, but still better than a carb. there may be a reason people are selling them but I think they work better than a carb when properly installed
