Fuel Pump Code 54

I own an 89 vette and I don't hear the fuel pump 'whine' for 2 seconds before I start it - Is it loud enough where it is obvious?? I do hear the fan from the engine 'kick on'. I'm getting code 54 which is fuel pump related
