My SRC light came on. I did a search on this site and found GREAT info. Determined it was the front right shock (code 14). Took solenoid off and found the cast gear that is mounted on the top of the shock was broken. It's held on by a little pin that can be easily removed with your smallest drill bit and a little hammer.

Anybody got one of these little gears that they would be willing to part with?

Thx

More progress

I was able to see the switch turn when you first turn on the ignition so I am assuming that the switch is OK.

Does anybody know what the switch is looking for when it first powers up? Seems like the shaft that the gear is on turns for ever? Is there suppose to be a stop?

Can someone explain this?

Thx!!!!!!!

Still lookin for the liitle gear that goes on top of the shaft on the shock.

Found a post that explained it

60 deg one way, and 160 deg the other. The reason mine would twirl is because the part of the gear that stops it was broken off. I also inspected the plastic gear better and it is broken as well. Looks like I need a new shock and actuator. Will be lookin around for used schock and actuator.
thx

Mid America has a very good price on FX3 shocks. Used shocks are hard to find.

If you don't mind not driving the car, take all the shocks off and have Bilstein rebuild them for you.

You might consider checking the others for leaks while you're working on the shocks and getting all you need while they're still available.

The actuator is very hard to find used and almost as hard to find new. I just had 2 actuators replaced and all four shocks recently. Next year, I'll ship the old set to Bilstein and have them rebuilt with a 'sportier' valving.

Unfortunately the little pot metal gear is not a service item from either GM or Bilstein. Actuators can be probably be found on eBay. They were available from the catalogs at one time but they ran around $150 per! :eek

Once the SRC light comes on, the controller will automatically set the other shocks to "Tour" mode. The console switch has no effect.

Call Bilstein at 1-800-537-1085 (San Diego) and talk with the tech folks. You can have all of your shocks rebuilt for a reasonable cost and they can even change the valving if you want a stiffer setting and they even have an autocross-specific valving you can order. Ask them about actuators too.

It should only take a couple of weeks to get the shocks done. If you have to drive the car daily, just get a set of cheapie auto parts store shocks in the interem.

The FX3 system is a very good design and it's well worth keeping up. One neat thing about the FX3 system is that it adjusts itself as speeds change. The faster you go, the stiffer the shock gets within the range of the console switchr position.

The system goes into "Performance" It does this to keep the suspension tight if the owner decides to drive at high speeds, or if the failure happens while at a high speed.

The 92 Shocks are the later design, the gear should only adjust 90 degrees.

Everything else you have heard is good advice. Bilstein will repair your shock for 100, this is due to the gear being broken and needing a new rod.
