I have a 1992 Vette with the FX3 ride control. I just noticed the there was a peice of black tape over the light on the information center for the FX3.

Is this a common thing with a quick fix? my extended waranty does not cover air ride systems so I hope its a cheep easy fix.

These are possible sources,
1. Shock actuators.
2. FX-3 module
3. Selector switch.

There is a way to interrogate the system, but I'm not sure which pins to ground on
a 12 pin DLC tto retrieve codes. Some one will come up with the answer.

You can run diagnostics on the SRC system easily to see what trouble codes have been set. At the ALDL connector, bend a paper clip so you can push the ends into pins C and A (top row, "C" is 4th from left and "A" is right-most). Turn the ignition to "ON" but don't start the engine. The "Service SRC" light will begin to flash.

The codes are made up of two digits. A digit is read by counting the number of flashes that occur within a half-second of ech other. The second digit will appear about one second after the first digit has gone. Each code will repeat three times before the next code begins with a 3 second pause between codes. The trouble codes display begins with showing a Code 12 three times. This is the start of the code sequence.

There are a number of codes to look for after the 12:
13 Left Rear time out
14 Right Front time out
21 Left Front time out
22 Right Rear time out
These codes mean that the actuator are moving too slowly or not getting the correct feedback signal

31 Left Front out of position
32 Right Front out of position
33 Left Rear out of position
34 Right Rear out of position
These code mean that the actuator has not found the end stop position of the shock during initialization.

There are other codes:
23 Loss of vehicle speed signal
This will set if the ignition switch is cycled ON/OFF 3 times without the car moving. IF the entire system is working properly, the Service SRC light will go out after the car moves after the 3rd ignition cycle.
41 SRC Switch short to voltage
42 SRC Switch open contacts
A Code 42 is set it the console switch is not pointed to one of the 3 position.s
43 SRC Switch circuit open

Components of the SRC system are expensive!! Actuators can run as much as $150 each at the dealer and new replacement shocks can be as much as $200 each. The shock can be rebuilt by Bilstein in San Diego for around $60 each. They can also be -re-valved for preformance use. Call 1-800 537-1085 and ask for Bill Hindorf. If you have a bad actuator, try www.partszoneonline.com There is a toll-free number to call for support for part numbers.

Let us know what the codes are that you retrieve.

Is the FX3 ride control a air system? if it is not my extended waranty will cover repairs.

Thanks for all the info.

Its electrical/mechanical. The actuators (elect)adjust the valving of the shocks (mech). I sure hope your covered.:Twist

What sort of extended warranty do you have? GMPP? I would think that most extended warranties would not cover items like shocks as they would be considered maintenance type items. Look through the list of items covered for suspension components and see if shocks are specifically covered.

I would think that if they are, then a bad actuator would also be covered as would the SRC controller itself (it's located in the compartment behind the driver's seat). They are electrical components, but are a dedicated part of the shock system.

I have a GE extended waranty. I got it through my credit union. Ill find my paper work and read it.

I dont know what setting the FX3 ride control is stuck on but it is kinda rough over slightly bumpy roads and lots of road noise also. Maybe this is how all Vettes are. This is my first Vette.

Thanks

i think they usually get stuck in the softest position... C4's are rough riding cars, compared to a regular car anyway
