What is the best and cheapest way to gain 50hp to an '04?
I do not want to alter the hood or the looks of the car except rear exhaust trips or something. I guess a supercharger? I take that back you guys tell me. That's why I am asking.

Thanks,
wwr

A superharger will definitly do it but your gonna over shoot your goal. Even the small blowers do around 100 hp, the intercooled ones will do 150 to almost 200 hp. If your just looking for 50 and want the cheapest I would say intake and exhaust. You will probably just hit 50 more hp with the right setup. Check out mid america for a package by SLP for different HP increases. From what I've heard they are pretty reliable and since its a package you know for sure what the HP will be (since after the first mod you can no longer just add whatever the manufactor claims, the two improvements might claim some of the same improvments even though they are different pieces)

There's a few things you've left out which can help us to help you! Are you driving an MN6 or an A4?

When you say "best & cheapest" way, what are you willing to spend.

Are you mechanically inclined to do the install's yourself or will you seek pro. help!

What is your goal with the car. Straightline speed, autocross, or just for sake of saying "I have 400rwhp".

I can tell you right now, the above statement is very correct. Procharger/supercharger and Wet/Dry Nitro kits, will get you very well over 400rwhp...more like closer to 500 rwhp and up, but will come at a considerable price that you may not be willing/able to part with.

I have an 03' coupe A4. Its' out-of-the-box setup was 2.73 rear-end, stock exhaust, 220 thermo, horrible air-box, and several other parts (too long to list) were not the greatest to put on the car. At stock, mine dynoed at approx 295 rwhp. Since my mod fever began, I have installed Kooks longtube headers, halltech stinger, 160 thermo, Corsa Indy's, and a 3.42 rear-end diff. Work done by 21CMC. Results were in at 332 rwhp and 339 tq. Now, I'm looking at putting in a decent cam plus a torque converter and that should put me right at +/- 400rwhp. Keep in mind, 21CMC's dyno numbers are conservative because they warranty their parts. If you want the price tag, send me a pm! :upthumbs

The easist way for 50 hp would be a nitrous oxide kit. For only a 50 hp shot I don't think you would need any other mod. Down side is dealing with the bottle. just my opinion. Jay

Stop! right now...and look in the mirror...

Trust me ...once you start down this road...you'll never stop ....!

While looking in the mirror....you need to see really how far you will want to go in time..

Do yourself a favor...if you don't mind me saying...

Don't piece meal your self with mods...as it rarely satisfies..and the bolt on costs definitely add up while the incremental increase in hp is lame at best...

I give this advice as I made the same "decisions" I just want 50 more hp...and in time...I just kept getting the itch for a few more ponies..

I'd really suggest a supercharger and if you don't want to change the hood then choose a brand that doesn't require that.

Plan on spending 8 grand installed...Trust me its worth it.

Depending on where you live in the country will depend on who might be suggested for the installation...

Don't do the bolt ons...just spend the time considering what I am saying...

Bolt ons blow...for adding 50hp ...imho and if you get it..you will soon be wanting more as well...

Here's a list of mods I've done piecemeal...(70 rwhp increase)

air filter intake (400)
throttle body ported (200)
air bridge
gears 3.73 (1,000)
Long tube headers (2,000)
----------------
These mods gave 30rwhp.

then I added a 224/224 .563 114lsa and dual crane valve spring kit/ASP reduction pully/lsedit tune (2400 installed)

For an additional 40rwhp...(but it requires LONG TUBES which are about 1500 to 2 grand installed)

I'm at six grand on just these mods and if you asked me all along the way..I'd say I just want a few more ponies...and so the next mod went on....and on..and on...(every few months and the mod bug bit)

I've got more mods but not included in a hp increase so I won't include it here...and take the thread in a different direction..

Looking at the numbers....the supercharger for 2 grand more than what I spent would have been money well spent...

better daily driver capability...and double the hp increase for only 25% more money...(which I easily spent on other types of mods on the car anyway!)

I'm very pleased what I've created but just trying to give another corvette enthusiast some good insight?

HTH and seen in a constructive perspective.

JB

One last piece of advice...in case you decide to go with piecemeal? Don't buy mild steel headers even if coated with Jet Hot...

The brand I put on suck...They've been holed and fixed...holed and fixed...so what I'm suggesting is if you go for the cam/header/convertor/gear route....Buy high quality stainless steel headers...unless you go the supercharger route..then just use stock manifolds..

I believe it boils down to smog regulations. What will fail you where you are located?

Cold Air Intake, Exhaust, a healthy cam, and a decent tune will get you this sort of power.

MTI makes some great cams, I would suggest the G1. The idle will be rough and reminiscent of the old 'cammed' muscle cars you may be familiar with. Gas mileage shouldn’t suffer much, unless you have a heavy foot. You should be able to pick up the cam and valve train for around $750-$800.

A cam such as the G1 will, however, most likely fail a smog test in states such as California.

If you’re in Cali, a supercharger may be the best bet. However, if you are in a state that doesn’t have extreme smog regulations, then I believe a cam (and possible heads) package is the best bang for the buck. The heads/cam vs. supercharger debate is about as bad as the old supercharger vs. turbo argument and it’s going to simply depend on what you want. I do believe people are making over 400rwhp with a few basic bolt on mods and a cam similar to what I mentioned. By the way, the specs on the G1 are 228/232 .588/.575 113LSA.

Regardless, you are going to need to lay the appropriate foundation. Start with an Intake and Exhaust and go from there.

Just in case you’re wondering, here is what such a cam sounds like. This is the MTI X1 cam, but will sound more or less just like the G1: http://www.baileymotorsports.com/videos/MTI-X1.wmv

...right click and choose save as, something is up and its not allowing you to click it

That'll do it - but you will likely need a hood!

Yeah, Baby - 435 rwhp is a kick. Looking at a blower cam and intercooler - 500rwhp in the making

On your 2004, a proven way to get emissions compliant, reliable power is to go the Callaway Power Group route.

The Power Groups are designed to work together and the first "group" of components, nets you 21 hp with the 1st Poer Group and second group together, that number climbs to 42hp and with Power Groups 1, 2, and 3, the total power is upped 103 hp :eekover stock :lou

Here is a link to their packages - I hope this helps :v

Cheapest way to gain HP is Nitrous for sure. Under $500 can get you far past what you want. can start with a 50hp shot and keep moving up as you feel the need to 150hp or more if ya want.
