How would I go abouts removing a gas tank from a '76?
Do I have to remove the body to do this?
...
Also, where can I find the engine VIN number on the same vehicle?

Thanks

remove the spare tire carrier and there are two straps holding the tank in run it almost out of gas first or it will be heavy.

Thanks for the help with the ID process but the engine does not match up...I think it doesn't at least.

The number on the right side of the block ahead of the cylinder is:
131163631 KO2 15 CKL

Also the number on the rear top of the block is:
GM3970010

I'm thinking the casting date is March 9, 1970.
Can anyone help me out and tell me if this is correct?
Help Id the engine?
Anything?

Thanks,

Debber

debber. the Mortec,Inc website list the 3970010 casting as a generic 350 from 1969 to 1980 and possibly 2 or 4 bolt mains

The CKL suffix is for a 1973 350 Calif engine with automatic and used in the F, A, and B bodies.

tom...

none of this makes sense the casting number 3970010 is a 350 number either 2 or 4 bolt mains (I have one of each) but you cannot get a 262 out of a 350 block.

the ckl may have been used for a 350 which is the 010 casting, I hope it is not a 262, l-48s in 76 were slow enough without loosing a hundred cubic inches:L :L :L

The CKL code was used for the 262 in Nova/Chevelle, but not with the 3970010 block - they used the 360851 block; the CKL code usage with the 010 block in '73 was a 2-barrel automatic 350 in passenger, Chevelle, Monte Carlo, and El Camino, and the first three of those models were all built at Oshawa in 1973.

vin codes

Hey guys,
Thanks a lot for all the helpful info on the engine in my vette. I curious to know if the engine came with a stock 2 barrel carb, will the four barrel be OK on the same engine?

Also I have a chance to by a 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a 455 in it for cheap. How much trouble would it be to stuff that engine into the vette? Do the bell housing bolts match up?
Do the mounts match up?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I just bought the Vette about a month ago and my knowledge factor on all these old cars is not up to par.

Thanks,
Debber

Stuffing a 455 into a Vette would probably be a chore, but you can do anything with a cutting torch and a mig welder given enough time and money.
stick with Chevy Engines, If you have a 4bbl on it now and its running what most likely happened was the origional engine went south and it was replaced with a junk yard 350
76 don't get a whole lot of respect, you can't even find a diecast model of them.

That said
How fast do you want to go and how much money are you willing to spend?

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Does the engine I have in the vette right now good enough?
What I mean is that it is a 350. With a valve job, and a new carb, is it different at all from the original vette engine?
It would cost me almost nothing for a valve job, and I know the compression on it is okay.

my opinion is as long as you are satisfied with it who cares what anyone else thinks, put some Corvette valve covers on it and no one will be the wiser :L

very well put, I fall in between I drive my modified every day it is reliable and quite quick for a 76 l-48 :J
